EMIS Group CIO: Breaking down NHS studious information silos by going all-in on AWS

Sharing is caring

The next-generation of a technology, famous as EMIS-X, is due to start rolling out to GP surgeries before a finish of 2019, and aims to relapse these manifold studious information silos by interoperability and open standards.

Both concepts, incidentally, that health and amicable caring secretary Matt Hancock championed in his Oct 2017 “technology vision” for a NHS, as he works towards realising his prophesy of formulating a “most modernized health and caring complement in a world”.

While there is vigour from on-high for NHS medical providers to welcome interoperability, it creates good blurb clarity for a retailer village to build products that play easily together, says Malcolm.

For one thing, he says, there is doubtful to be one product or provider whose offerings are zodiacally lucky by all or whose functionality can accommodate a needs of medical professionals operative in any opposite form of clinical caring environment.

“We’ll never get everybody to establish to put all in one bucket, and it would be a disaster if we tried,” he says. “The health secretary has done it really transparent that he wants interoperability between a several providers and we support that, though – to us – interoperability means a bit some-more than that.”

It is EMIS Group’s perspective that violation down a studious information silos will also need providers to build systems that capacitate patient data to be selectively, as good as securely, shared.

“This is where a indication is a bit different,” says Malcolm. “We are selectively permitting an organization to share data, and establish who it is going to be common with, and that pity has to be legal, reliable and authorised.”

The complement will grasp this, he adds, by checking a education and certification of a chairman attempting to entrance it, to safeguard they are purebred with a British Medical Association, for example.

“EMIS-X is designed to join all these things behind adult and emanate a complement that allows all of a organisations to keep tenure of that record nonetheless concede pity by vouchsafing any organization confirm what it is they wish to share,” he says.

“If we only take GPs, for example, one of a reasons they have been resistant to pity information is for 30 years they have been essay small comments about you. They can write giveaway content comments [on your records] and they don’t wish all that exposed.”

There are apparent potency advantages to be gained from enabling such pity within a clinical setting, though also from an appointment administration standpoint too.

“Today, if we need an appointment with a consultant, a GP chooses one for you, they send off a mention letter, a week to 10 days after they send we behind an appointment time that might be wholly untimely for you,” he says.

“At a finish of it, your GP isn’t wakeful of what is going on with we and that consultant until a consultant sends behind a created news that gets posted, scanned in and all that stuff. It is bonkers, as distant as potency is concerned, and it costs a fortune.”

This involved and incongruous routine is one EMIS is aiming to exterminate by a inclusion of a “federated appointments” functionality within EMIS-X, that will capacitate clinicians to find out and book diagnosis sessions while they wait during whatever time and plcae is many available for them.

“It’s a ability to say, ‘I need to make an appointment for a studious to have a sold form of procedure, and we wish to hunt opposite all of a providers of that procession and tell a studious we can book them in for that now and mislay all a time that customarily takes’,” says Malcolm.

“We wish to cut out all a paperwork, make it easier for a studious and quicker, some-more fit and cheaper too.”
