Some changes are underway at Stack Overflow<\/a>, the online community where some 50 million developers and others converge to talk programming and many other things<\/a>. TechCrunch has learned and confirmed that the startup has conducted a substantial number of layoffs across the company as it looks to steer the business more towards its core QA products and away from areas that were seeing less demand. As part of this, the company is also closing its offices in Denver.<\/p>\n

\u201cStack\u00a0Overflow\u00a0made the decision to expand product development in our core QA product offerings, including\u00a0Stack\u00a0Overflow\u00a0Enterprise and Channels for business developer collaboration and our well known core platform for developer knowledge sharing,\u201d said a statement from the company. \u201cThese are in-demand solutions with strong pipelines and customer interest. As a result we are unfortunately restructuring some of our sales and marketing efforts including the closing of our Denver facility and the reduction of some of its staff.\u00a0Stack\u00a0Overflow\u00a0customers and loyal users will see no interruption in service. Business is growing across all products and this move will even speed more features and offerings to market over the coming months.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

The company is not specifying exactly how many people are being impacted by the restructuring. A source that contacted TechCrunch claimed that the number of people affected worked out to about 20 percent of Stack Overflow\u2019s 300 employees, or 60 people. That\u2019s the number also being stated by at least one of the people affected today<\/a>.<\/p>\n

There is also some discrepancy about what jobs are being affected. As you can see in the statement, Stack Overflow mentions sales and marketing efforts, but our source, and the trail of tweets on Twitter<\/a>, point to people affected in sales, data, engineering, and product.<\/p>\n

As some of the jobs affected pointed to staff in the company\u2019s recruitment business Careers, our source said that the company was \u201clooking to pivot away\u201d from this business, but Stack Overflow has confirmed this is not the case in a second statement it issued after the first one.\u00a0Developer Jobs<\/a>\u00a0will continue to exist.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe company is not pivoting from Talent (Careers). The hiring landscape is more competitive than ever and\u00a0Stack\u00a0Overflow\u2019s ability to help businesses find technical talent is massive,\u201d said a spokesperson. \u201cThe company is reallocating resources to invest in new areas of growth, but the existing business around Talent remains strong. Although\u00a0StackOverflow\u00a0shut down its Denver office to increase operational efficiency in the United States, the company is experiencing rapid growth in Europe. Last month operations were expanded with the opening of a Munich office.\u201d<\/p>\n

When Stack Overflow\u00a0raised $40 million<\/a> in 2015, the company specifically said the investment would be used to build out the recruitment part of its business, which at the time accounted for two-thirds of the company\u2019s revenues and was growing on the back of the reputation and traffic of Stack Overflow\u2019s QA niche. (Advertising made up the remaining third.)<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u00a0don\u2019t see HackerNews\u00a0or GitHub\u00a0as competing against us directly for the same dollars or even the same attention,\u201d CEO and co-founder Joel Spolsky said at the time. \u201cProgrammers\u00a0use us for different things and they don\u2019t really overlap. They are all in the developer attention space but so are a lot of other things like World of Warcraft. We\u2019ve come to dominate getting answers\u00a0just like GitHub\u00a0is dominating social coding and version control.\u201d<\/p>\n

It\u2019s not clear today what Stack Overflow\u2019s main revenue generator is, or how the recruitment play has grown, but the company now appears to be putting its forward bets into paid enterprise services.<\/p>\n

Channels<\/a>, a new product that is still in beta, is a private version of Stack Overflow that companies can run just for their teams. It\u2019s an interesting twist on the company\u2019s mainstay of open-ended QA, but it also potentially leads it into an already competitive space, with the likes of Slack, Atlassian\u2019s Hipchat, Microsoft and many more vying to be the platform for teams to exchange ideas with each other.<\/p>\n

To date, Stack Overflow has raised around $68 million from investors that include Andreessen Horowitz, Union Square Ventures, Spark Capital, Index Ventures, Bezos Expeditions, Founder Collective and a number of individual investors.<\/p>\n
