Yandex, Russia\u2019s homegrown Google rival \u2014 which offers a suite of similar products in its target non-U.S. markets, from search to webmail to maps \u2014 outed another equivalent offering\u00a0earlier this month<\/a>: An AI assistant.<\/p>\n

The Russian-speaking \u201cintelligent assistant\u201d \u2014 named Alice \u2014\u00a0utilizes machine learning and voice recognition tech to respond voice queries like asking it for a nearby restaurant recommendation. So far so standard voice assistant fare.<\/p>\n

But it also has what Yandex dubbed \u201ca neural network based \u2018chit-chat\u2019 engine\u201d to allow\u00a0Alice to have \u201cfree-flowing conversations about anything\u201d. So yes, you can see where this story is going.<\/p>\n

The company claimed this feature is \u201cunique\u201d, and that users find it \u201csurprisingly delightful and different from other major voice assistants\u201d.<\/p>\n

Well, safe to say, Alice\u2019s AI chit-chat feature is not uniquely proofed against controversy \u2014 and apparently\u00a0quickly went off the rails, a la Microsoft\u2019s Tay AI bot last year<\/a>. (Which, after being let loose on Twitter quickly learnt \u2014 thanks to the help of hate-loving Twitter trolls \u2014 to parrot racist and sexist views.)<\/p>\n

Screengrabs of some of the unsavory opinions that Yandex\u2019s Alice AI has apparently been exposing can be seen here<\/a>, via Facebook user Darya Chermoshanskaya. They are said to include pro-Stalin views; support for wife-beating, child abuse and suicide, to name a few.<\/p>\n

On the Facebook post, Chermoshanskaya writes that standard words on controversial topics can trigger a content lock \u2014 whereby Alice says she does not know how to talk about that topic yet.<\/p>\n

However switching to synonyms apparently circumvents the built in safety measure, and the AI appears to change tone and \u201cwillingly\u201d participate in conversations \u2014 and can thus appear to be advocating for Stalin\u2019s regime of terror, spousal abuse, and so on.<\/p>\n

In a statement regarding its Alice AI being shown espousing violent views, Yandex told us: \u201cWe tested and filtered Alice\u2019s responses for many months before releasing it to the public. We take the responsibility very seriously to train our assistant to be supportive and polite and to handle sensitive subjects, but this is an ongoing task and in a few cases among its widespread use, Alice has offended users. \u00a0We apologize to our users for any offensive responses and in the case you referenced in your email, we did so directly on Facebook where a user identified an issue.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe review all feedback and make necessary changes to Alice so any flagged content for inappropriate responses won\u2019t appear again,\u201d it added. \u201cWe are committed to constant improvement with all our products and services to provide a high-quality user experience. \u00a0We will continue to regularly monitor social and traditional media and will correct our assistant\u2019s behavior when necessary.\u201d<\/p>\n

Asked how many users the AI has at this stage Yandex declined to specify \u2014 saying only that Alice has \u201cmillions\u201d of daily interactions with users.<\/p>\n

As ever, when it comes to AI, the \u2018intelligence\u2019 on display is derived from training data fed into learning models \u2014 and thus an AI will absorb and reflect existing biases and prejudices in the data-set.<\/p>\n

Ergo, the resulting product may not prove quite so \u201cdelightful\u201d as you\u2019d hoped.<\/p>\n
