Facebook has released new guidelines<\/a> that outline how publishers can adapt to the company\u2019s efforts to fight back against fake\/false news and other low-quality content.<\/p>\n Head of News Feed Adam Mosseri unveiled the guidelines at an event this morning at the CUNY Graduate School of Journalism, where he said they don\u2019t represent any changes to Facebook\u2019s approach \u2014 they\u2019re just a way for publishers to understand the strategy.<\/p>\n He added that Facebook\u2019s efforts in this area are \u201ctargeted at bad actors.\u201d But for legitimate publishers, the guidelines<\/a> can still be important to \u201cmake sure you don\u2019t get caught up in the crosshairs.\u201d They fall into the three broad areas.<\/p>\n First, there\u2019s the importance of meaningful, informative content. For publishers, that means both understanding what their audience wants and also creating fast-loading mobile web experiences.<\/p>\n Second, there\u2019s accurate, authentic content. That means publishers should avoid clickbait (such as withholding information in a headline or exaggerating the content), as well as content that\u2019s misleading or that the publisher doesn\u2019t have rights to.<\/p>\n Third, Facebook is emphasizing \u201csafe, respectful behavior.\u201d That means avoiding sexually explicit content, hate speech and other things that might violate Facebook\u2019s community standards.<\/p>\n After describing the guidelines, Mosseri answered questions from CUNY\u2019s Jeff Jarvis and other journalists. First up was a discussion of\u00a0the recent test that removes Page posts<\/a> (including those from news publishers) from the News Feed unless they\u2019re promoted through advertising.<\/p>\n For publishers worried that this means there will be no way for them to reach their audience on Facebook except through ad campaigns, Mosseri said, \u201cI don\u2019t think there\u2019s any version of the world where we launch this as it is.\u201d<\/p>\n He didn\u2019t get specific about how it would work when and if it rolls out more broadly. However, he did note that even though most of the discussion has focused on public versus private content, there\u2019s also \u201chybrid\u201d content, where (say) your mother posts a link from The New York Times. Presumably, those kinds of links would not be hidden by these potential changes.<\/p>\n
