In a swift response to the news that advertisers were able to target anti-Semitic phrases<\/a> on Facebook, the social network has shut down \u201cself-reported targeting fields\u201d in the ad system<\/a> until further notice.<\/p>\n

It was shown earlier today in a ProPublica report that Facebook\u2019s advertising system gladly surfaced categories like \u201cHow to burn jews\u201d and \u201cHitler did nothing wrong.\u201d Obviously Facebook itself didn\u2019t invent these itself, but scraped them from profiles that had listed the phrases under such headings as \u201cfield of study.\u201d<\/p>\n

This led to the offensive phrases being listed alongside ordinary hobbies and interests that advertisers may want to target. It\u2019s an inconvenient blind spot to be exposed just now, while Facebook is under fire for inadvertently selling what appear to be politically motivated ads to a network of fake Russian profiles during election season. One wonders if there\u2019s anyone to whom Facebook won\u2019t<\/em> sell ad space?<\/p>\n

But removing the fields in question from consideration for advertising is the right move, since the prospect of intelligently sorting through millions of real and imagined vocations for the occasional abuse is a daunting one.<\/p>\n

The fields will remain inadmissible as ad categories \u201cuntil we have the right processes in place to help prevent this issue.\u201d<\/p>\n
