Hinge<\/a>, the newly pivoted \u201crelationship app\u201d, has today unleashed<\/a> an app that it believes is the solution to the \u201cdating apocalypse.\u201d<\/p>\n

The whole idea is to ensure that users are all on the app for the same general reason: to find an actual relationship. In order to do that, the company has totally rejiggered the app\u2019s UI and protocol, as well as adding a $7\/month paywall.<\/p>\n

Hinge has been working on the new version of the app for almost a year<\/a>, and sent out an email to users a couple of weeks ago<\/a> notifying them of the transition to a new, paid app.<\/p>\n

In the new Hinge, users will build out their profile with pics, answers to questions, and general information. Hinge is calling this user profile a \u2018story\u2019 (super original!) because users can build out their story with more and more content over time (much like Her, the queer dating app for women).<\/p>\n

But there is no swiping.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur original vision was always to create something that people could build a relationship from,\u201d said CEO and founder Justin McLeod. \u201cOver time, the category exploded and what we found is that people were, especially because of the way the UI was designed as this sort of swiping game, that people weren\u2019t just using it for dating. They were using it for fun or hookups.\u201d<\/p>\n

McLeod and his team are firm believers that the swipe does not a true relationship make.<\/p>\n

The company launched a website as part of its campaign called The Dating Apocalypse<\/a>, wherein Hinge cites its own data (from studies of its users) that shows swipes don\u2019t lead to actual relationships.<\/p>\n

\u201c81 percent of people on Hinge didn\u2019t find a serious relationship on the app,\u201d reads the website, and \u201conly one in 500 swipes leads to a phone number being exchanged.\u201d These figures come from Hinge\u2019s existing user data and a survey it sent out to 300 users in August 2016.<\/p>\n

The new app looks much closer to Instagram, where users are interacting with each other\u2019s content instead of swiping yes or no. As part of this shift, Hinge has also gotten rid of the double-opt-in, or \u201cmutual match.\u201d Almost all of the mobile dating apps out there use the mutual match to connect people, expecting that if two people swipe right on each other than they are more likely to start a conversation.<\/p>\n

    Hinge, on the other hand, believes that the mutual match protocol tempts people to swipe right on more people than they\u2019d actually like to date, just to see who likes them.<\/p>\n

    \u201cWe\u2019ve seen in testing that full conversations are about five to seven times more likely than they were on the old Hinge or other dating apps since we got rid of double-opt-in and let people interact with each other\u2019s content,\u201d said McLeod.<\/p>\n

    But that\u2019s just a small part of McLeod\u2019s plan to offer a platform that cultivates real relationship.<\/p>\n

    A paywall is the other part.<\/p>\n

    Hinge will cost $7\/month for all users starting today. This puts it at a far lower price point than other paid dating services like Match.com and eHarmony, but more than traditionally freemium apps like Tinder and Bumble.<\/p>\n

    However, it\u2019s unclear if $7\/month actually changes the intentions of users. After all, part of the problem with dating apps is that users have the ability to \u2018flirt\u2019 with many parties at a time.<\/p>\n

    \u201cWe saw that men used to swipe right about 60 percent of the time, and that women were swiping right around 30 percent of the time,\u201d said McLeod. \u201cWith the new structure, it\u2019s about half of that on both sides, so people are being way more selective.\u201d<\/p>\n

    But this begs the most important question in the dating industry as a whole: If Hinge is successful with its new paywall and UI, and all of its users can successfully find relationship, how does it keep its paying customers?<\/p>\n

    After all, there is a reason that Tinder feels like a game as much as it does a dating app. The unspoken hope is that everyone can enjoy judging the hotness of others, whether or not they\u2019re seeking a relationship. In fact, lots of folks on Tinder are actually in<\/em> a relationship.<\/p>\n

    Of course, users who just met someone special on the app are more likely to hang around and continue that conversation. For a while.<\/p>\n

    \u201cWe want to be the type of service that people will talk about and tell their friends about,\u201d said McLeod. \u201cThat\u2019s great advertising for us, and that lets us actually afford a price point at $7 a month. And hopefully, we can attract users at 10x the amount of the old dating apps like Match.com and eHarmony.\u201d<\/p>\n

    Just as in relationships, time will eventually tell the outcome of the new Hinge. In the meantime, you can find the app here<\/a>.<\/p>\n
