Facebook is testing a new way to \u201cgo live\u201d on its social network \u2013 an option that was previously available by pressing the \u201cLive\u201d button on the Status update box. Now, for some users, the ability to \u201cgo live\u201d \u2013 meaning start a live video broadcast \u2013 is appearing right within the Facebook Camera screen, alongside other options, like the ability to use Facebook Live Audio, or create a GIF.<\/p>\n
Live streaming on Facebook was a feature first introduced back in 2015, initially only for public figures and celebrities<\/a>. It later rolled out to regular Facebook users<\/a> via the company\u2019s iOS and Android applications, and, at the beginning of this year, to\u00a0the desktop<\/a>.<\/p>\n With the growing popularity of podcasts, Facebook later also added a Live Audio feature, designed largely for publishers and authors,\u00a0<\/a>who use it for things like news radio-like shows, book readings, and other audio-only broadcasts.<\/p>\n New look for Facebook Live via camera button and Facebook Live Audio available now. #Facebook<\/a> pic.twitter.com\/KsQVeQFvyU<\/a><\/p>\n \u2014 Jose Gutierrez (@fbjag) August 4, 2017<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n But you can\u2019t \u201cgo live\u201d from the Facebook Camera today, which actually seems a little odd.<\/p>\n It makes sense to combine all\u00a0camera-related functions on just one screen, as this test is doing. That includes taking a personal photo or video to share on Facebook, using photo filters, making a GIF (another option still in testing<\/a>), or recording live audio and live video.<\/p>\n For those who are seeing the new version of Facebook Camera, the different functions are appearing across the top of the screen under tabs that read \u201cLive,\u201d \u201cNormal,\u201d and \u201cGIF.\u201d<\/p>\n When you\u2019re on the \u201cLive\u201d tab, you can tap on an icon of a video camera to live stream video, or tap on a microphone icon to just stream audio.<\/p>\n What\u2019s more, the new feature also offers you the option to go live just in your Facebook Story, as opposed to sharing your live video in a regular Facebook post. Or you can \u201cgo live\u201d both in your Facebook Story and post at the same time.<\/p>\n This is available from a drop-down menu that appears, where you can also choose your audience for the live recording \u2013 like Friends, a particular friends list, or Public, for example.<\/p>\n This \u201cLive Facebook Story\u201d option is basically Facebook\u2019s version of the Instagram Live feature<\/a> introduced last winter.<\/p>\n Facebook Live Stories were recently spotted in the wild, too:<\/p>\n Facebook is rolling out LIVE Stories <\/p>\n h\/t @TomOsman<\/a> pic.twitter.com\/M1j9Gy1Oz9<\/a><\/p>\n \u2014 Matt Navarra \u2b50\ufe0f (@MattNavarra) July 27, 2017<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n Facebook confirmed to TechCrunch that this is a test for the time being, and the feature hasn\u2019t been fully rolled out to Facebook users.<\/p>\n\n
