Art filter photo app Prisma<\/a>\u00a0is adding\u00a0a big new feature to its iOS app in an update landing today: support for videos.<\/p>\n The app, which lets\u00a0people turn their selfies into cartoonies by using deep learning algorithms to process photos in various graphic styles, quickly surged to millions of downloads in a viral splash after launching this summer<\/a>.\u00a0And just as quickly\u00a0spawning a rash of fast following clones.<\/p>\n As well as creating arty selfies, users of the Prisma\u00a0iPhone app can now turn snippets of video up to 15 second long into\u00a0playable\u00a0animations by selecting one of the nine filter styles currently available \u2014 and waiting for the app\u2019s AI\u00a0algorithms to weave a\u00a0frame by frame transformation.<\/p>\n Turning a boring shot of a hallway into a moving\u00a0comic book in a matter of minutes (as per the clip example below).<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Videos can be recorded in the app or selected for processing\u00a0from the\u00a0camera roll. You\u2019ll need iOS 10 for Prisma\u00a0video to work, and a little patience as it can take more than a minute to process a clip depending on length, resolution and which model iPhone you\u2019re using.<\/p>\n Android users will have to be more patient \u2014 as there\u2019s still no\u00a0support for video there.<\/p>\n Prisma says it\u2019s\u00a0planning to add\u00a0offline photo processing to the Android\u00a0app first, in \u201ca week or so\u201d, after which co-founder Aram Airapetyan says they\u2019ll\u00a0\u201cjump on a video development\u201d. \u201cAndroid is a tough guy,\u201d he adds.<\/p>\n Processing time for Prisma video on iOS is around two mins for the iPhone 6; 55-60 secs for iPhone 6s; and half a minute for iPhone\u00a07, according to Airapetyan, although in my experience videos\u00a0seemed to finish process a little quicker than that on average.<\/p>\n All processing is done locally on the device so expect your iPhone hardware to heat up a little\u00a0as you play around with remixing videos as\u00a0mosaics or Munches or manga-style cartoons.<\/p>\n Next up on Prisma\u2019s\u00a0iOS\u00a0to-do list is adding a GIF creator\u00a0\u2014 with looped video touted as coming \u201cvery soon\u201d, aka later this month.<\/p>\n Rough round the edges\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n Prisma video on iOS is just a beta launch at this stage, with Airapetyan touting improvements in quality coming down the pipe, and an expanded choice of\u00a0art filters to style clips \u2014 adding their intention is to\u00a0make\u00a0all Prisma\u2019s photo processing styles available for video,\u00a0and add some new ones too.<\/p>\n They\u2019re\u00a0not first to the punch with art filtered video, though \u2014 others, such as the startup behind photo processing app\u00a0PicsArt<\/a>, got there\u00a0before them. (In PicsArt\u2019s\u00a0case siloing video processing into\u00a0a second standalone app, called Magic Video).<\/p>\n But Airapetyan is dismissive of rivals\u2019 efforts. \u201cWe\u2019re faster and better, taking into account the fact that we\u2019re launching videos in beta, as the final quality will be much better,\u201d he\u00a0argues when asked how\u00a0Prisma video\u00a0stacks up against PicsArt\u2019s take.<\/p>\n \u201cWe\u2019ll also increase the photo styles\u2019 quality within a couple of weeks,\u201d he adds.<\/p>\n It\u2019s fighting talk, but Prisma is clearly\u00a0now having to play catch up with the\u00a0competition, thanks to its early viral success.<\/p>\n At this beta stage the quality of Prisma video also\u00a0has some rough edges. More polished looking results are possible with Magic Video \u2014 although personally\u00a0I prefer the simpler Prisma interface vs all the toggles and layers available\u00a0in Magic Video (but if you prefer a greater choice of\u00a0editing options and tools you\u2019ll likely disagree).<\/p>\n In a quick test of Prisma video ahead of the new feature launch\u00a0I found results looked a little crude and were less immediately appealing vs Prisma\u2019s\u00a0art filtered photos \u2014 with a tendency towards producing flickery footage.<\/p>\n That said, as with the\u00a0art photos, different Prisma filters can yield pretty radically\u00a0different results, some of which look better\u00a0than others. So you\u2019ll want to spend some time playing around with different styles.<\/p>\n I found there was typically at least one style\u00a0that looked interesting if not entirely pleasing. So there\u2019s certainly fun to be had here, although perhaps less instant viral potential vs the snap and share gratification of art filtered selfies.<\/p>\n Here are a couple more\u00a0test clips I made \u2014 using the \u2018Gold Fish\u2019 and \u2018The Scream\u2019 filters respectively:<\/p>\n
