The Internet of Things \u2014 the area of technology where previously dumb objects are getting\u00a0equipped with radio signals and microprocessors to be\u00a0connected, monitored, controlled and supercharged through networks \u2014 is still in its early days, but one of the more interesting startups in the field is raising some significant money as it gears up to take a leading role in its future.<\/p>\n
Sigfox<\/a>, the startup out of France that is building a global network for\u00a0connected objects that emit low-power signals, is in the process of closing a round of funding of between $100 million and $200 million, at a valuation of around $600 million. The round is near completely and likely\u00a0to be closed by the end of this year, possibly as soon as next month, according to the company\u2019s CEO and co-founder Ludovic Moan.<\/p>\n The news comes at the same time that Sigfox is unveiling an identity rebranding, where it is positioning itself as a network not just for connected objects, but as a provider of\u00a0connectivity for digital services, specifically seamless and more efficient handoff between different networks, for example.<\/p>\n On top of solving some of the more immediate needs for connecting objects and networks, Sigfox has\u00a0very lofty ambitions to do even more. The company believes that its architecture, which is not based on the operator\u2019s view of network connectivity, could help eliminate data roaming, the cost and complexity of silicon for connecting objects, and even the need for batteries in devices.<\/p>\n (Sidenote that I promise I am not making up: Moan is a big disciple of the Simulation<\/a> theory and also believes that his company could\u00a0play a role in enabling our constructed existence. \u201c[The simulation]\u00a0is part of the vision that I have, and I want Sigfox to be able to stay true to this,\u201d he said. \u201cThis world is virtual. At the end of the day we are not living in the real world.\u201d)<\/p>\n TechCrunch learned of the new financing round and has confirmed the details with sources close to Sigfox and then confirmed it with the company. The round is expected\u00a0to include at least one strategic investor out of China and \u201csome familiar faces.\u201d<\/p>\n The Chinese investors are of particular interest to Sigfox as it continues to build out its global network. The company is already live in 24 countries \u2014 including a 100-city deployment in the U.S.<\/a> \u2014 and plans to bring that to 30 in the near future.\u00a0Moan \u2014 who confirmed the fundraising when I asked him about it directly \u2014 also told me\u00a0that China and India, huge markets for mobile and wireless services, are very much in its sights as a part of that.<\/p>\n To date, Sigfox has disclosed around $150 million in funding<\/a>\u00a0with its last valuation at around $400 million. Existing investors\u00a0include typical financial backers like Elliott Management and Partech Ventures, as well as a long list of strategic investors including utility giants Air Liquide, chip and equipment makers like Intel and Samsung<\/a>, and a host of service providers like Eutelsat, Japan\u2019s NTT and Telefonica.<\/p>\n The company has made waves in the industry up to now by providing an alternative network and model to the flavor of IoT that is being put forward by carriers. Carriers, of course, are looking to IoT as a route to adding more data traffic to their\u00a0existing\u00a0networks. On top of this they are hoping to build out their services businesses to integrate and help run those IoT systems on behalf of other organizations. That makes sense, since the basic\u00a0data connectivity for connected objects is a low-margin business.<\/p>\n And if IoT is a game of scale, Sigfox is hoping to be the biggest. The company\u2019s pricing starts at \u20ac1 per device per month up to \u20ac1 per device per year\u00a0(with a sliding scale based on volume), and it already has over\u00a08 million low-powered devices registered on its network, which covers 1.35 million square kilometers and 358 million people.<\/p>\n It also says that it works with\u00a01,000 partners that include\u00a0network operators, component manufacturers, integrators and platform developers as part of its business, and that 250 startups are currently developing IoT projects\u00a0implementing its connectivity.
