\u201cI think it would frankly be silly of us if we were to say \u2018Oh, see that good idea over there that\u2019s actually fulfilling a need people have to share more moments of their life? Because one person did that we can\u2019t even go near that idea.’\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

That\u2019s Instagram\u2019s VP of Product Kevin Weil\u2019s perspective about cloning Snapchat. He\u2019s the man in charge of bringing Snap CEO Evan Spiegel\u2019s vision to a much larger audience, reforging his features for the mainstream, and then taking Instagram a step further.<\/p>\n

But rather than showing guilt, remorse, or reluctance about copying what\u2019s worked for Snap, he sees it as a foregone conclusion \u2014 the inevitable march of progress where you either step in line or get left behind.<\/p>\n

On stage today at TechCrunch Disrupt NY,<\/a> I asked him whether he agrees with his own CEO Kevin Systrom, who told me last year that \u201cThey deserve all the credit\u201d<\/a> in reference to Snapchat inventing Stories. His response:<\/p>\n

Essentially, the goal is making Instagram more useful to its users, driving its mission to bring people closer together. Duplication as a justified means to an end. \u201cIt\u2019s about the problem you\u2019re solving,\u201d Weil says.<\/p>\n

The fact is that most of apps we use each day are based off the building blocks of the products that came before. If social apps didn\u2019t copy each other, there\u2019d only be one app with a feed, one with hashtags, one with image filters, one with user profiles, or one with instant messaging.<\/p>\n

Weil offers the analogy that \u201cPixar was the first to do computer animated films but I think we\u2019re all better because of folks like Dreamworks that are also bringing great films.\u201d<\/p>\n

The\u00a0more complex\u00a0question than why Instagram copied Snapchat Stories (to provide value to its users), or whether it\u2019s right for Instagram\u2019s business (ads between Stories could earn Instagram a lot of money), is whether this kind of copying is honorable\u00a0\u2014 or even sustainable.<\/p>\n

When asked, Weil pushed back about whether strategy can be judged on this scale.\u00a0\u201cI don\u2019t think there\u2019s an honor to it. I guess that\u2019s not a word that I\u2019d ascribe to it.\u201d<\/p>\n

There is an argument that Instagram has a duty\u00a0to serve its users\u00a0and that tech\u2019s competitive environment necessitates Instagram\u2019s copying. Instagram Stories has 200 million users each day, so it\u2019s clearly making some people happy, and that might be enough.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are clearly building something that people care about and that\u2019s what matters\u201d Weil concludes. \u201cIt\u2019s a big industry, there\u2019s going to be multiple successful players across the entire industry so it\u2019s not about one person going down for us. It\u2019s about \u2018are we building the right thing that adds value to people\u2019s lives?’\u201d<\/p>\n

Silicon Valley prides itself on innovation, but really spends most of its time on rapid incremental iteration. If a tech giant like Facebook can iterate faster than a startup can on its own idea, that might just be \u201cthe way the tech industry works.\u201d Though if cloning by tech giants makes new startups even riskier, they might not get funded, and one day, there might be no one left to copy.<\/p>\n
