\u201cA\u00a0database that replicates itself and is meant to survive\u201d \u2014 that was the connection that Cockroach Labs<\/a> CEO Spencer Kimball made between the startup\u2019s memorable name and its value proposition. Despite entering a crowded market,\u00a0Cockroach has been able to gain the favor<\/a> of some of the most well known VCs in tech. Today\u2019s $27 million Series B is being led by Redpoint<\/a> with participation from Benchmark<\/a>, GV<\/a>, Index Ventures<\/a> and FirstMark<\/a>.<\/p>\n At its core, CockroachDB is an open-source database service that\u2019s optimized to reduce downtime. Every time you visit a website, every time you check your bank account and every time you log into your favorite social networking app, you\u2019re dependent on databases to be ready and able to feed you necessary information.<\/p>\n CockroachDB quite literally replicates itself like an insect and distributes\u00a0information\u00a0so it doesn\u2019t become a sitting duck, or die if we\u2019re keeping with the metaphor. The company calls this feature\u00a0multi-active availability. No matter how widespread the adoption of\u00a0your company\u2019s product or service, minimizing failures is a priority.<\/p>\n In addition to the new capital, Cockroach is also officially launching its\u00a0version\u00a01.0.\u00a0Kimball tells me that during the beta period and even earlier, eager customers, largely startups, were implementing the service before it had been deemed fully ready for deployment. That\u2019s a scary proposition, but it speaks to the community that the team has been able to build over the course of the last three years.<\/p>\n \u201cWe are planning a 1.1 in five months and then we will move to a six month cadence,\u201d\u00a0Kimball told me in an interview.<\/p>\n Originally started as a\u00a0GitHub project, Cockroach will be monetizing\u00a0around a paid enterprise tier. This premium version will include distributed backup and restore functionality in addition to enterprise support\u2014 things\u00a0that are not\u00a0optional for serious users managing large amounts of data.<\/p>\n Chinese tech conglomerate Baidu is one of Cockroach\u2019s earliest customers. The company has been testing\u00a0Cockroach, processing two billion inserts a day while simulating nightmare scenarios to check for resiliency.<\/p>\n Moving forward,\u00a0Kimball has a concrete idea of where he wants Cockroach to be by the end of the year. In lieu of a boilerplate statement about growing sales channels,\u00a0Kimball hinted at an upcoming feature called geo-partitioning.
