A number of Instagram users have found they\u2019re no longer able to temporarily disable their accounts<\/a> \u2013 a feature, similar to Facebook\u2019s<\/a>, that allows you to take a break from the social network for a period of time, but stops short of a full account deletion. The bug has been spotted in the wild since at least February<\/a>, and is the subject of a number of complaints across social media, including Reddit<\/a>, Quora<\/a>, and Twitter<\/a>\u00a0since that time.<\/p>\n

As Instagram\u2019s own Help documentation explains<\/a>, the account disabling feature will temporarily hide your profile,\u00a0photos, comments and likes until you choose to reactivate your account by logging back in. The option to disable is only available when you log in via a mobile browser or computer \u2013 it\u2019s not a setting you can reach through Instagram\u2019s native mobile app, to be clear.<\/p>\n

Many people use features like this when taking short social media breaks, as a disabled account can help you avoid the temptation of launching the app or\u00a0wasting time browsing the feed.<\/p>\n

In some cases, it\u2019s a first step for those\u00a0considering a full account deletion \u2013 an experiment to see if it\u2019s worth giving up the app entirely. People also disable their accounts when they need to focus on something important \u2013 like a big project at work or exams at school, for example.\u00a0Plus, the feature can aid\u00a0when there are privacy concerns of some kind, such as when someone is a victim of cyberbullying or cyberstalking and needs to get off the service for\u00a0a while.<\/p>\n

There are a number of other personal reasons why people take breaks, too.<\/p>\n

In Instagram\u2019s case, you\u2019re able to disable your account once a week,\u00a0<\/a>but the problems being reported are not\u00a0from people who are trying to switch off their account more often than that \u2013 the feature just isn\u2019t working at all, they\u2019re saying.<\/p>\n

In addition, according to many complaints, Instagram\u2019s feature has been broken for some time and they\u2019re not able to get any help through technical support channels.<\/p>\n

After attempting to click the feature from their \u201cEdit Profile\u201d section, users say they\u2019re\u00a0directed to their feed on Instagram\u2019s homepage, but\u00a0their account remained active. People said they\u2019ve tried this in different web browser, as well, to see if it was a bug associated with just one platform. However, the problem remained.<\/p>\n

    Users said\u00a0that Instagram\u2019s support email wasn\u2019t working and they were told\u00a0to report the problem in the app through an email auto-responder. But flagging bugs in the app is only a one-way street \u2013 you\u2019re not sent any response or offered help. Others tried reaching out to Instagram through social media channels like Facebook messages and tweets, but the company hadn\u2019t responded those complaints, either.<\/p>\n

    This speaks to a broader problem with Instagram support \u2013 users are struggling to get help when their accounts are hacked, spammed, or shut down for violations. (Just read the barrage of comments on its Facebook page, for instance.) And Instagram\u2019s Help Center <\/a>is not much help on these matters, either.<\/p>\n

    For instance, a link on its homepage that you can click to \u201clearn more\u201d about what to do when you\u2019re experiencing an issue just goes to a dead page\u00a0\u2013 a \u201c5xx Server Error\u201d page is all that displays when clicked.<\/p>\n

    We reached out to Instagram this morning for a comment on the bug, and to find out if there is a plan to address\u00a0the problem.<\/p>\n

    Following our initial inquiry, clicking the option to disable your account now takes you to a broken web page. \u201cSorry, something went wrong,\u201d the page now reads. \u201cWe\u2019re working on it and we\u2019ll get it fixed as soon as we can,\u201d it says.<\/p>\n

    It\u2019s unclear if this is related to the stability issues that briefly took the site an app down worldwide earlier today<\/a>.<\/p>\n

    Hopefully<\/em>, that means engineers are working on a fix. But Instagram doesn\u2019t have a comment on the situation at this time. A rep for the company said Instagram is looking into the problem, and will let us know when more information becomes available.<\/p>\n
