A number of prominent Twitter accounts were hacked to tweet Nazi messages after\u00a0Twitter Counter<\/a>, a popular tool for analyzing Twitter\u00a0followers, was hacked.<\/p>\n

Official Twitter accounts belonging to Amnesty International, Forbes and other prominent organizations, not to mention many regular users, were accessed to post\u00a0swastikas and other Nazi-related messages in a move thought to be related\u00a0to Turkey\u2019s diplomatic spat\u00a0with the Netherlands and Germany,\u00a0the Guardian reported<\/a>. The accounts themselves were not hacked. Instead, the attackers gained access to Twitter Counter\u2019s service which was then used to send the\u00a0tweets.<\/p>\n

The messages have since been\u00a0deleted, but\u00a0Amnesty was among those to confirm<\/a> that it had\u00a0been\u00a0compromised.<\/p>\n

Twitter Counter, which is owned by the same parent company as tech blog The Next Web*, confirmed the issue. It said that it had issued a block on the ability to post tweets from its service to nullify the threat.<\/p>\n

\u201cOne thing is important to note \u2014 we do not store users\u2019 Twitter account credentials (passwords) nor credit card information,\u201d Twitter Counter CEO\u00a0Omer Ginor added.<\/p>\n

In addition to that, Twitter confirmed that\u00a0it had taken action on its side.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe identified an issue affecting a small number of users. Source was a 3rd party app and it has been resolved. No action needed by users,\u201d the company\u00a0said in a statement<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The incident is a reminder that despite all of the options for securing a Twitter account, apps and services that connect to the social network offer a route for hackers to compromise users. That was the case here. If you\u2019re a Twitter user who connected many services\u00a0to your account, then it may be worth reviewing or disconnecting them via this setting here<\/a>\u00a0to avoid potential issues in the future.<\/p>\n
