Twitter confirmed it\u2019s testing a new feature that\u00a0flags users\u2019 profiles\u00a0as potentially including \u201csensitive content.\u201d When you click on one of these profiles from a link on Twitter, or if you visit the profile\u2019s web page directly, you won\u2019t be immediately shown the users\u2019 tweets. Instead, a warning message displays, reading \u201cCaution: This profile may include sensitive content.\u201d<\/p>\n

When you click a link to the profile on Twitter, the message appears in a pop-up window. And if you visit the profile directly, the warning message is all that displays until you agree to view the content by clicking the \u201cYes, view profile\u201d<\/em> button.<\/p>\n

A reporter at Mashable<\/a> first spotted the feature when trying to view the profile of\u00a0technology analyst Justin Warren, but could\u00a0not determine how the content was flagged.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s fairly difficult to do in this case \u2014 after all, Warren\u2019s tweets seem fairly innocuous, except for a little<\/a> swearing<\/a> at times.<\/p>\n

Twitter tells\u00a0us the new feature works similarly to how other sensitive content on Twitter gets flagged, based on users\u2019 settings.<\/p>\n

Currently, the company permits content that contains violence or nudity, but\u00a0it draws the line at \u201cpornography or excessive violence in live video, or in your profile image or header image,\u201d according to its page on sensitive media.\u00a0<\/a>It doesn\u2019t mention profanity, racism, bigotry and other types of offenses, however. But sensitive content is not limited to \u201cviolence or nudity,\u201d we\u2019re told.<\/p>\n

Users can choose to mark themselves as someone who tweets sensitive content through their \u201cPrivacy and Safety\u201d settings.<\/p>\n

In addition, other Twitter users can report tweets to the Twitter team for review. In this case, if the tweet is determined to be potentially sensitive, Twitter will label the content appropriately \u2014 or remove it, if it\u2019s a live video. It may also adjust your account setting for you, so your future tweets are marked accordingly, if it deems it necessary.<\/p>\n

For repeat violations, Twitter may permanently adjust that setting on your behalf, it says<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The process for marking entire profiles as sensitive follows a similar set of guidelines and processes, including the fact that Twitter can take\u00a0an active role in\u00a0identifying these accounts, based on the content of the account\u2019s tweets.<\/p>\n

The feature is still in testing, and not widely rolled out at this time.<\/p>\n

A Twitter spokesperson confirmed the new feature, saying \u201cthis\u00a0is something we\u2019re testing as part of our broader efforts to make Twitter safer.\u201d<\/p>\n

In recent days, Twitter has taken a number of steps to address the issues of safety and abuse on its network. It has rolled out new filters for hiding harassing content,<\/a> safer search results<\/a>, a \u201ctime out\u201d feature for bullies<\/a>, user interface tweaks to hide low-quality and abusive tweets, a better Mute option<\/a>, more transparency around abuse reporting\u00a0<\/a>and smarter algorithms<\/a> for identifying and handling abusive content, as well as those<\/a>\u00a0that prevent abusers from coming back after it bans using\u00a0new accounts.<\/p>\n

Warning users about select individuals is not necessarily another change aimed at quelling abuse, but rather making the network feel more friendly. It\u2019s not exactly a novel idea, of course. Plenty of networks flag content that\u2019s not appropriate for all to see \u2014 like YouTube\u2019s warnings on age-restricted content or Facebook\u2019s warnings<\/a> about graphic content, for example.<\/p>\n

As with other new anti-abuse features, some people seem genuinely baffled as to why they were flagged, not seemingly able to connect the dots between their tweets and their consequences.<\/p>\n
