Snap, the parent of Snapchat, had a great first two days on the stock market, only to be followed by two terrible ones. Shares quickly tumbled to beneath $22, an over 11% drop in morning trading.<\/p>\n

This means that most investors are\u00a0already\u00a0losing money on the social media company. Snap opened Thursday at $24 per share.<\/p>\n

It is still above its $17 IPO price, but that\u2019s mainly relevant for the exclusive club of high-net worth individuals and institutional investors who were allowed to buy into the IPO.\u00a0<\/a>Those lucky folks are still seeing 25% gains.<\/p>\n

And with a market cap of roughly $30 billion (fully diluted), Snap is still worth significantly more than its valuation prior to the IPO, or roughly $20 billion (fully diluted). The dilution is important because there are a lot of stock options and other shares that will be added to the\u00a0circulation.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a strong company, but went very far on voting rights,\u201d said Max Wolff, market strategist at 55 Capital.\u00a0\u00a0He\u2019s referring to the fact that Snapchat\u2019s newest shareholders won\u2019t have voting power,\u00a0a break from tradition.<\/p>\n

Not only because of the lack of voting rights, but also because insiders sold shares in the IPO<\/a>, \u201cinvestors are tolerating things that they don\u2019t usually tolerate,\u201d said Kathleen Smith, principal at Renaissance Capital. \u201cE<\/span>xpectations are very high for the company.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

While its governance has raised eyebrows, some are also skeptical about Snapchat\u2019s slowed user growth. Instagram copied its \u201cstories\u201d feature and wound up stealing some of its momentum.<\/a><\/p>\n

Analysts have been largely negative about the company<\/a> and it seems like today\u2019s investors are taking note. Most have given\u00a0Snap \u00a0a \u201csell\u201d or \u201chold\u201d rating.<\/p>\n

Social media companies have experienced mixed results in the public markets. Twitter\u2019s IPO was well-received, but its stock price was ultimately met with a lot of volatility. Facebook had a difficult first few months as a public company, but has grown substantially over time.<\/p>\n
