The deal is the latest in a series of acquisitions made by AWS to expand the kinds of services that it\u2019s offering to its users beyond basic cloud computing.<\/p>\n

Other recent acquisitions have included Harvest.ai<\/a> to add more security services and Biba for videoconferencing expertise<\/a>. (As we noted when we first broke the news of Biba\u2019s acquisition, Amazon was planning a new videoconferencing service, which in turn launched just last month, Chime<\/a>.) Further back, AWS\u00a0acquired another video tech company, Elemental Technologies<\/a>, for $296 million<\/a>. Elemental Technologies\u2019 focus was\/is\u00a0on\u00a0video encoding and transcoding software for multiscreen content delivery.<\/p>\n

We don\u2019t know yet where Amazon will go with Thinkbox, but given that there has been a huge rise\u00a0of streamed digital video content globally, one obvious guess is that Amazon has identified that since it\u2019s hosting a lot of this (one of its big customers is Netflix, as it happens), this is an open opportunity: build and sell more services to developers and businesses turning to Amazon already for back-end support, to help them not\u00a0just deliver content, but create that content as well.<\/p>\n

And as for the fact that Thinkbox already offers solutions for on-premises architectures, that\u2019s interesting, too: while the number of businesses working in all-cloud environments is growing, there are also a number using hybrid deployments, and so Thinkbox\u2019s dual approach could be useful for AWS to address that need for flexibility.<\/p>\n

According to Crunchbase, it looks like Thinkbox Software \u2014 which has a base in Winnipeg, Canada, but also operations in\u00a0Vancouver,\u00a0Toronto, London U.K. and\u00a0Los Angeles \u2014\u00a0was bootstrapped<\/a>.<\/p>\n

We\u2019ll update this post as we learn more.<\/p>\n
