One billion people use Facebook Messenger every month<\/a>. And no matter how bad the current perceptions of the bot scene<\/a> are, that number is hard to ignore. Octane AI<\/a>\u00a0is counting on celebrity content creators to build conversational experiences that people actually want<\/em> to have. With its public launch and the rollout of its content creation platform\u00a0Convos, the Octane team is taking a gamble on the medium. If it catches on, the company will have a community-driven head start that will make any\u00a0quips about the lack of sophistication in the typical\u00a0\u201cbot\u201d\u00a0tech stack inconsequential.<\/p>\n

The Convo platform lets anyone create tree-like stories that others\u00a0can engage with.\u00a0Building the conversations is as easy as\u00a0having a slightly delusional conversation with yourself \u00a0\u2014 the barrier being creativity rather than the underlying mechanics.<\/p>\n

Once published, users have the power to make\u00a0decisions that\u00a0change narratives\u00a0within a given\u00a0chat. This happens via embedded bubbles, almost like a multiple choice question for each response. The pre-defined structure takes variability out of the experience and removes the need for natural language processing.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere are\u00a0multiuple categories of bots that will\u00a0all do well,\u201d explained Ben Parr, co-founder of Octane AI.\u00a0\u201cBut we don\u2019t see anyone doing a great job with\u00a0content.\u201d<\/p>\n

Octane\u2019s private beta began back in November. Through a series of pilots, including one with Maroon 5, the team noticed abnormally high conversion\u00a0rates. Though Octane wasn\u2019t able to provide specifics, the takeaway here is that bots created on the company\u2019s platform might be able to drive more traffic with a smaller dedicated following than something like a traditional Facebook Page.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re not heavy on machine learning yet, but personalization of\u00a0Convos could be huge,\u201d said\u00a0Parr.<\/p>\n

Parr, who was\u00a0previously Editor-At-Large at Mashable, is joined by\u00a0Leif K-Brooks, the former founder of Omegle\u00a0and\u00a0Matt Schlicht, founder of\u00a0Chatbots Magazine, to make up the founding team of Octane AI. Schlicht received criticism<\/a> back in November for failing to disclose Octane\u2019s ambitions when soliciting pitch desks from the bot community to pass on to investors. Parr believes that, \u201cThe bot community has gotten even stronger\u201d in the time since\u00a0Schlicht\u2019s apology.\u00a0The company raised $1.5 million in a November 2016 seed round<\/a> led by\u00a0General Catalyst<\/a>.<\/p>\n
