Style transfer app Prisma<\/a> is adding another couple of new features as it works\u00a0to keep its community engaged: a styles store and a tool that lets users create their own styles by uploading an image and tweaking various filters.<\/p>\n

It says the latter has been the most popular feature request from its 2M+ daily users.<\/p>\n

While the store sounds like a route to monetizing with paid content, for now at least that\u2019s not the case. It\u2019s more a way to help users navigate\u00a0new styles as Prisma releases them, rather than flooding the app with too many options. Users can browse the store to find ones they like, download them and delete others they don\u2019t.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere are 44 styles available right now. This makes people confused as they have to scroll through lots of styles they don\u2019t like to get to the favourite one. Now people will be able to download and keep the styles that they really enjoy,\u201d it notes.<\/p>\n

Users will also be able\u00a0to rate and share styles on the Store with friends \u201cin the near future\u201d.<\/p>\n

And while the feature is called \u201cStore\u201d all content is free \u2014 at least it is for\u00a0now, though adding a store does potentially open a door for monetizing via some paid downloads in future.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor the time being, we do not consider earning money from users,\u201d co-founder\u00a0Aram Airapetyan tells us.<\/p>\n

Also today Prisma is releasing a desktop tool letting users create their own styles \u2014 albeit it\u2019s only letting its most active users get their hands on this, and they\u2019ll need a fair amount\u00a0of patience for the\u00a0process.<\/p>\n

TechCrunch tested a version of the style creation tool before it was publicly released and the whole process ended up taking\u00a0several days to go from uploading a photo to seeing\u00a0how it\u00a0styled\u00a0other imagery.<\/p>\n

Not because it literally<\/em> took days, but because the wait times (for uploading\/processing\/review) were so opaque\u00a0It was essentially easier\u00a0to leave it working away and check back on it periodically. (Hey, it was MWC<\/a> this week, so it\u2019s been especially busy.)<\/p>\n

Prisma claims\u00a0it takes \u201can hour or so\u201d to create a style, but does warn wait times may be longer \u201cif the queue is big\u201d. And the queue will obviously\u00a0be bigger after launch, even if it\u2019s only letting a few users get their hands on the tool.<\/p>\n

The interface at this point\u00a0is also pretty unwelcoming, with a large number of unlabeled slides that can be tweaked to set rules for \u201ccontent weights\u201d and \u201cstyle weights\u201d \u2014 but no apparent way to see\u00a0how tweaks will influence the finished result. It\u2019s a case of trial and error plus patience for now.<\/p>\n

Given the interface lacks any pointers, I opted to leave the sliders where they\u00a0were \u2014 so this is a default result.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a desktop product right now,\u201d says Airapetyan. \u201cThe interface is not final for sure. We\u2019ll add some hints and useful notes there. But people will definitely be able to create their own styles on mobile devices. We\u2019re a mobile company.\u201d<\/p>\n

He\u00a0subsequently explained the first slider is for shape, the second for color, the third for big objects, the forth for small objects and the last for tiny details \u2014 so you\u2019d likely achieve\u00a0less photo-realistic style transfer effects by doing more tweaking.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s not easy to understand this. But we\u2019ll make it very simple so that every one could use it without any problems,\u201d he says, adding: \u201cThe best advice is experiment with slides and a picture.\u201d<\/p>\n

In December the Prisma team\u00a0launched its own social sharing platform<\/a>, seeking to turn what was then just a cool photo-editing tool into a more autonomous community vs only piggybacking on other content-sharing networks.<\/p>\n

Adding more options for users to customize the styles they can choose and use should help to expand the look and feel of content shared to Prisma\u2019s platform. Whether a greater style choice will be distinct enough to build a lasting\u00a0community around the\u00a0concept remains to be seen.<\/p>\n
