Data visualization has been done \u2014 there are publicly traded, interactive, real-time and, heck, even artificially intelligent companies promising data visualization. But despite all the noise,\u00a0Portland-based Reflect<\/a>\u00a0is making a go of it in the space, opening up its public beta today. By putting developers first and\u00a0letting them\u00a0integrate and customize visualizations in their own creations, Reflect wants to be so useful it becomes part of the developer toolkit.<\/p>\n

After raising $2.5 million in seed capital last year<\/a> from\u00a0Draper Fisher Jurvetson<\/a>, Reflect\u00a0CEO\u00a0Alex Bilmes set off on a listening tour to hear from more than 2,000 customers. His take-away was that an entire market was being ignored by\u00a0Tableau<\/a> and that companies are willing to pay for the ability to build products on top of data visualization as a service.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s handy to think about mobile and web analytics companies as a proxy for where a service like Reflect would be welcome. Even outside of software, consumer campaign-based analytics\u00a0like Spotify\u2019s year-in-review<\/a> could be built on\u00a0Reflect. In fact, the company powered a similar campaign for GitHub called \u201cReport Card.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n

\u201cWe are focusing on companies that have data as their value proposition, that are investing in collecting tons of data and that see\u00a0data as\u00a0core to what they are,\u201d said\u00a0Bilmes.<\/p>\n

Initially,\u00a0Reflect\u2019s model required companies to give it more data than most enterprises\u00a0were comfortable with.\u00a0After some necessary retooling, Reflect gained the ability to\u00a0integrate directly into a customer\u2019s architecture, skipping the step where data has to move off servers. This way companies don\u2019t have to open up vulnerabilities by sending Reflect security credentials.<\/p>\n

One of the benefits of Reflect\u00a0is that its developer-first approach doesn\u2019t create a zero sum game for non-technical employees. Once a visualization is implemented, anyone can go in and edit features to their liking using the Reflect design studio.<\/p>\n

Reflect employs a lean team of 10 and has worked with companies like\u00a0GM, Barracuda Networks, Zendesk, Simply Measured and TUNE.<\/p>\n
