Flying\u00a0from SF to LA every week sucks, and so Sriram Krishnan<\/a> is leaving a big financial opportunity at Snap to ditch the commute. The former Facebook Audience Network executive spent the last year running Snap\u2019s Ads API and platform, and now he\u2019s leaving.<\/p>\n

The move was reported in Recode<\/a> today, saying \u201cThe timing here isn\u2019t great for Snap\u201d. But that immediately set off speculation that he might not have faith in Snap\u2019s upcoming IPO.<\/p>\n

Krishnan immediately tried to clear up what was really behind his departure, tweeting he wanted to be closer to his wife\u00a0Aarthi Ramamurthy<\/a>, founder of camera and gadget rental startup Lumoid<\/a>, and is \u201clooking forward to less of airports\u201d. He says he\u2019ll be taking time off before jumping into another job.<\/p>\n

He\u2019s leaving because he hates the commute. He wants to start a family and his wife is already busy running her own startup in SF. He was sick of spending most of his time away from her to work in LA.\u201d<\/p>\n

Having a founder as a significant other is probably hard enough on a relationship, let alone having the other partner gone the rare times they\u2019re free. With a traditional stock vesting schedule, he\u2019d likely have needed to stay another year to get any more Snap shares, so there wasn\u2019t a reason to stick through the commute any longer. He already worked at Facebook, after all, so he probably isn\u2019t strapped for cash.<\/p>\n

Snap declined to comment beyond confirming the departure. The company will have to find someone else to lead its API, measurement partnerships, and the rest of the ad platform. These technologies are critical to Snap reaching its maximum ad scale by making it as easy as possible for brands to spend big to reach teens.<\/p>\n

Krishnan seems to have run the adtech playbook he learned at Facebook:<\/p>\n

  1. Build out Ads API so big businesses don\u2019t have to buy ads manually<\/li>\n
  2. Develop measurement partnerships so advertisers are confident they\u2019re getting their money worth<\/li>\n
  3. Build Custom Audiences so advertisers can upload their customer email lists and target them<\/li>\n
  4. Establish creative agency partnerships to connect advertisers to marketers who know how to succeed on the platform<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Though Krishnan\u2019s move might stir some concerns regarding Snap\u2019s public debut, its ad revenue growth was one of the highlights of its IPO filing. Revenue hit $400 million in 2016, up almost 6X from $59 million in 2015.<\/p>\n
