There are plenty of chat apps, and Stories is being copied successfully by Instagram, with more Facebook clones on the way. But Snapchat\u2019s unique Discover section, full of mobile-only daily magazines from professional publishers, could evolve into something game-changing: the premier place for premium mobile video.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Snap calls these programs \u201cShows.\u201d Think \u201cHBO of the Smartphone,\u201d but supported by ads.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Not YouTube, full of random crap. Not Facebook, where you accidentally watch videos. But a curated destination, with the same reliable quality you\u2019d expect from a classy channel like HBO.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\">Must-see Snap TV<\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Snap could use\u00a0this revenue stream. It just <a href=\"javascript:void(0)\">priced its upcoming public offering<\/a> below its original target after its <a href=\"javascript:void(0)\">financials looked a bit shaky<\/a> in the IPO filing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Snap\u2019s hardware, like Spectacles, isn\u2019t making money yet, and probably won\u2019t for a while. Instagram already has more Stories users and is aggressively courting advertisers for its Snapchat feature clone. Other than through sponsored creative tools, chat is tough to monetize via ads without feeling interruptive.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">And while a constant stream of Discover editions fill Snapchat with professional content, they\u2019re not the marquee, must-watch stuff that could drag new and lapsed users back into the app.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">That\u2019s why there\u2019s a huge opportunity for Snap to bring zeitgeisty entertainment specials to its app. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-1453776\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.rsoftsolution.com\/blog\/wp-content\/plugins\/RSSPoster_PRO\/cache\/1cd45_planet-earth-snapchat.png?resize=640%2C379&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"planet-earth-snapchat\" width=\"640\" height=\"379\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Snapchat Shows appear as featured tiles beneath your friends\u2019 Stories and in the Discover section. Snap earns money from them by inserting Snap Ads into the episodes, and uses some of that cash to pay the creators. Just like in Stories, viewers can tap to fast-forward to the next scene, encouraging tight editing without the filler moments you might see in a 30-minute or hour-long TV program.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-1453783\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.rsoftsolution.com\/blog\/wp-content\/plugins\/RSSPoster_PRO\/cache\/1cd45_planet-earth-snapcode.png?resize=320%2C320&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"planet-earth-snapcode\" width=\"320\" height=\"320\" \/>Tomorrow, Snapchat will debut<a href=\"javascript:void(0)\"> its biggest Show yet<\/a>, BBC\u2019s Planet Earth II, and it comes with a huge sponsor: Goldman Sachs. The financial firm\u2019s Snap Ads will run in Planet Earth episodes. People can subscribe to watch Planet Earth II and get a sneak peek by pointing their Snapchat camera at this QR SnapCode and pressing on the screen.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"> And today, Snap is announcing a partnership with Discovery Channel to make MythBusters and Shark Week into Snapchat Shows.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">These build on its earlier experiments with Shows. First it made its own political series hosted by former CNN contributor Peter Hamby to learn the ropes of what would work in this new format. It found that the more made-for-mobile the content seemed, the more it resonated. Snap has since run Shows, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\">ABC\u2019s The Bachelor: Watch Party<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">NBC\u2019s The Voice, The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon and Saturday Night Live<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">E!\u2019s The Rundown<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">ESPN\u2019s Game Day<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Plus Snap has deals in place for more shows from Turner Broadcasting System and Time Warner channels Adult Swim and TBS, and an A+E show called Second Chance.<\/p>\n<h2>Snap\u2019s advantage in original content<\/h2>\n<p>Plenty of video platforms are trying to produce mobile-first, professional, original content. There\u2019s YouTube Red series like Lazer Team and the forthcoming experiments Facebook is working on. But these are typically trying to build new brands, rather than re-imagining fan favorites for the small screen. Snap\u2019s strategy is to be how the best old-world content creators adapt to the next era of video consumption.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1365514 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.rsoftsolution.com\/blog\/wp-content\/plugins\/RSSPoster_PRO\/cache\/682d8_christina-aguilera-snapchat-the-voice-finale-13.jpg?resize=640%2C337&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"christina-aguilera-snapchat-the-voice-finale-13\" width=\"640\" height=\"337\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Christina Aguilera hosts The Voice\u2019s Snapchat Show<\/p>\n<p>And though it might not be nearly as big as Google or Facebook, it has several advantages:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>\u201cCool\u201d Factor<\/strong> \u2013 TV shows that want to seem hip and relevant on mobile could appeal to a distinct and lucrative demographic by being featured in Snapchat. It\u2019s established a brand of being where kids want to hang out, rather than just being a utility.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>LA Entertainment Connections<\/strong> \u2013 Unlike most tech giants that are based in Silicon Valley, Snap\u2019s headquarters is in LA, alongside the entertainment industry. It could leverage its proximity and network to strike exclusive deals to host the most compelling content ported from TV.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">\n<strong>Experience Developing Originals<\/strong> \u2013 Snap didn\u2019t start by trying to convince TV networks and studios to produce expensive Shows for its unproven platform. It first worked with publishers like Cosmopolitan and People to update the idea of a print magazine for mobile, combining cheaper text content with short video clips and animations. The success of Discover likely boosted the confidence of TV studios that Shows would reach a sizable audience.<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">\n<strong>Tap to Fast-Forward\u00a0<\/strong>\u2013 While Snaps can only last 10 seconds (unless you\u2019re shooting on Spectacles), laced together they can form longer Stories that users have grown accustomed to skimming through thanks to Snapchat\u2019s tap to fast-forward feature. That means even if they\u2019re getting bored with a Show, they have another option beyond just closing the whole video or clumsily\u00a0scrubbing through with a more laborious finger movement. This makes Shows feel more watchable on Snapchat than they would on a platform like Facebook.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-1453829\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.rsoftsolution.com\/blog\/wp-content\/plugins\/RSSPoster_PRO\/cache\/af635_screen-shot-2017-02-16-at-9-08-55-am.png?resize=640%2C284&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"screen-shot-2017-02-16-at-9-08-55-am\" width=\"640\" height=\"284\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Plus, perhaps most importantly for Snap\u2019s revenue and future share price, the winds of change are blowing in its direction. While it hardly talked about Shows in its S-1 filing, it sure made its case that it could be teens\u2019 replacement for TV.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Snap wrote:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201c<span class=\"s1\">According to Nielsen, people between the ages of 18 and 24 spent 35% less time watching traditional (live and time-shifted) television in an average month during the second quarter of 2016 compared to the second quarter of 2010 . . .\u00a0<\/span>As people spend less time on traditional media like television, it becomes harder for advertisers to attain the same reach and frequency they have achieved in the past.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-1453831\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.rsoftsolution.com\/blog\/wp-content\/plugins\/RSSPoster_PRO\/cache\/af635_img_2314.png?resize=300%2C521&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Snapchat Discover\" width=\"300\" height=\"521\" \/>Indeed, eMarketer and IDC say U.S. adults spend 26 percent of their time consuming content on mobile devices, but only 13 percent of U.S. advertising goes there. That imbalance forecasts a ton of advertising dollars shifting to mobile, and Snap stands to soak them up.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The tech world has talked about the impending doom of television for at least a decade now. It still hasn\u2019t happened. But maybe that\u2019s because there was never a suitable replacement. While YouTube made bedroom videographers into stars and Netflix created traditional-length shows for the internet, neither were built for the vertical future of video on mobile.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Competitors such as Instagram may muscle in on the user-generated Stories that got Snap this far. Chat may be fragmented across a half-dozen apps. But Snap\u2019s success doesn\u2019t depend entirely on it being a social network.
