Twitter\u2019s recently launched \u201cExplore\u201d section<\/a>\u00a0will now feature live videos sourced from Periscope within\u00a0its \u201cTop Trends,\u201d the company announced<\/a> yesterday. The move will further integrate Twitter\u2019s standalone live streaming app into its main platform, leaving even fewer reasons to keep a\u00a0separate app dedicated to live streaming video around.<\/p>\n

The company\u00a0has been criticized<\/a> for its slow progress in\u00a0integrating Periscope\u2019s live streaming capabilities into its own app following the\u00a0acquisition of the up-and-coming live broadcasting tool back in early 2015<\/a>. Instead of leveraging Periscope\u2019s technology to immediately build out its own live streaming platform within Twitter, the company instead tried to operate Periscope as a separate entity \u2013 similar to how Facebook treated Instagram.<\/p>\n

But unlike Instagram, Periscope was acquired pre-launch, so it didn\u2019t have an existing community to build upon. It also faced intense competition from other tech giants, including Facebook and YouTube, as well as the then-newcomer startup Meerkat (which has since exited<\/a> the live streaming race.)<\/p>\n

Over the past several\u00a0months, Twitter has been course correcting with regard to how it treats Periscope, however. In December, it launched the ability to live stream <\/a>directly in Twitter itself, without having to open up the Periscope app. The streams started on Twitter would also be visible in Periscope, but the second app was no longer a requirement.<\/p>\n

In addition, Twitter\u2019s mobile redesign \u2013 which saw it replacing the \u201cMoments\u201d section with a broader \u201cExplore\u201d area for search and discovery of trends, Moments, video and more \u2013 has also put a greater\u00a0emphasis on live video. Of course, this includes those live streams Twitter now hosts through its numerous media deals, like those with the NFL and other sports organizations, Dick Clark Productions for various red carpet events, media\u00a0outlets for political and business news coverage, and more.<\/p>\n

Now, it will tap into Periscope to promote the live streams from individual users as well.<\/p>\n

These streams will be found in the \u201cTop Trends\u201d section within Explore, which is where you can browse the top hashtags and keyword searches that are currently blowing up on Twitter\u2019s network. When live videos are taking place in one of those trending sections, they\u00a0will be\u00a0marked with a bright, red \u201cLIVE\u201d label for easy spotting.<\/p>\n

When you watch the video, you\u2019ll have the same experience as in Periscope \u2013 with the ability to heart and comment on the video content, as well as retweet.<\/p>\n

Whether or not live video is available won\u2019t influence the selection of trends, apparently. As of the time of writing, none of the top trends are featuring live video. However, in the case of breaking news, it will be easier to \u201ctune in\u201d\u00a0to the live content on Twitter, courtesy of this\u00a0new feature.<\/p>\n
