Swiftype<\/a> started out helping publishers like TechCrunch offer better site search, but it\u2019s been expanding into other areas like customer support and e-commerce<\/a>. Now it\u2019s making its biggest leap yet, with the launch of an enterprise search product.<\/p>\n

Basically, Swiftype is offering large and small businesses a place where they can search all their documents and files across a variety of services. (Google just announced\u00a0a Cloud Search offering<\/a>, but it\u00a0only searches Google products.)<\/p>\n

\u201cAll these disparate sources are causing most of the knowledge inside companies to be fragmented,\u201d argued co-founder and CEO Matt Riley.<\/p>\n

So Swiftype search connects with Dropbox, Office 365, Google\u2019s G Suite, Zendesk and more. (There\u2019s also an API allowing customers to connect with custom\u00a0data sources.) At the same time, bringing all those services together in\u00a0one search interface is simply\u00a0\u201ctable stakes,\u201d Riley said.<\/p>\n

Where things get more interesting is in how Swiftype\u2019s artificial intelligence can look at all the data and build what co-founder and CTO Quin Hoxie called an \u201centerprise knowledge graph,\u201d which in turn improves the search experience.<\/p>\n

For one thing, it\u2019s not just searching for keywords, but also interpreting your queries in a sophisticated way \u2014 for example, it understands when you\u2019re looking for \u201ccontacts\u201d or \u201crecent docs\u201d even when those words aren\u2019t used in the documents themselves.<\/p>\n

For another, it can structure the data in useful ways \u2014 if you\u2019re searching for contacts at a given company, Swiftype can also present a card summarizing\u00a0all information your team has collected\u00a0about that company. Swiftype also creates a summary of relevant information from each document, so you may not need to open them at all.<\/p>\n

This is particularly important because Swiftype isn\u2019t just looking to create a desktop search experience. It\u2019s also built\u00a0a mobile app and is working to integrate with Slack \u2014 environments where you don\u2019t have time to fiddle with a bunch of different filters or browse a bunch of different pages, so a search\u00a0product\u00a0needs to understand complex queries and surface the most important\u00a0information from documents.<\/p>\n

And there\u2019s a browser plug-in too, where related content recommendations could be particularly useful \u2014 imagine opening a sales or customer service profile and seeing related documents pop up automatically. Ideally, Riley said, the sales\u00a0or customer service team might\u00a0never have\u00a0to go to Swiftype at all.<\/p>\n

He\u00a0also noted that set-up is\u00a0a much simpler process than installing\u00a0a traditional enterprise search appliance, which can take many months. With Swiftype, administrators just log in to connect any company-wide services, while individual users connect their individual accounts, and then you\u2019re good to go.<\/p>\n

Obviously, bringing together all these company files and documents creates questions about security. Hoxie said that Swiftype offers detailed controls over who gets access \u2014 you can limit access to the office network, or approve individual devices \u2014 and has also been careful about making sure users can only see the documents that they should have access to.<\/p>\n

To be clear, Swiftype isn\u2019t abandoning its site-search product. Hoxie said the team took pains to make sure both enterprise search and site search were using \u201cthe same core technology.\u201d So advances on that core platform, or on either side of the business, can eventually benefit all Swiftype products.<\/p>\n

As for whether the Swiftype team\u00a0sees enterprise search as a bigger market, Hoxie said, \u201cIt\u2019s bigger. It\u2019s not bigger in every way \u2014 there are a ton of companies where site search is applicable, that\u2019s why the company\u2019s been successful to date \u2014 but I think that when you look at engagement, it\u2019s worlds different. At TechCrunch, the number of people interfacing with Swiftype for site search is probably one. With this, everyone would interact with us.\u201d<\/p>\n
