PowerAI<\/a> is IBM\u2019s machine learning framework for companies that use\u00a0servers based on its Power processors<\/a>\u00a0and NVIDIA\u2019s NVLink high-speed interconnects\u00a0that allow for data to pass extremely quickly between the processor and the\u00a0GPU that does most of the deep learning calculations.\u00a0Today, the company announced that PowerAI now supports Google\u2019s popular Tensorflow<\/a> machine learning library.<\/p>\n

While TensorFlow has only been available for a little over a year<\/a>, it has quickly become the most popular open source machine learning project on GitHub. IBM\u2019s PowerAI already supported\u00a0other frameworks and libraries like\u00a0CAFFETheano, Torch, cuDNN, and NVIDIA DIGITS, but Tensorflow support was sorely missing from this lineup.<\/p>\n

IBM clearly sees the combination of PowerAI with Nvidia\u2019s NVLink interface and Pascal P100 GPU accelerators as a way to differentiate itself from the competition \u2014 and in this case,\u00a0the competition it is gunning for is clearly Intel (though it\u2019s worth noting that Intel and Google also recently teamed up<\/a>\u00a0to improve TensorFlow performance on its CPUs).<\/p>\n

IBM, of course, isn\u2019t in the business of selling cheap servers, so the Power System S822LC for high-performance computing<\/a> \u2014 the one machine that supports PowerAI \u2014\u00a0doesn\u2019t even feature on a pricing chart. Prices for its commercial counterpart, though, start at just under $10,000.<\/p>\n

In addition to TensorFlow support, IBM also today noted that it now supports Chainer<\/a>,\u00a0a framework for building neural networks.<\/p>\n
