Twitter\u2019s Moments feature, which allows users to tell stories through a collection of tweets, is no longer going be front-and-center in the Twitter application. Instead, Twitter will today\u00a0replace the Moments section<\/a> with\u00a0a new tab called \u201cExplore.\u201d This area will serve as the home for finding out what\u2019s happening on Twitter, including\u00a0trends, Moments, search, and featured live video streams.<\/p>\n

The change will begin to roll out to Twitter users on iOS today, and will make its way to Android in the weeks ahead. It will also eventually come to the web, the company tells us, but that\u2019s not Twitter\u2019s immediate priority.<\/p>\n

Moments first launched<\/a> in 2015, and was meant to serve as Twitter\u2019s own take on short-form content \u2013 the kind of thing that\u2019s popular on other social apps \u2013 like Snapchat\u2019s and\u00a0Instagram\u2019s Stories, for example. But Moments take more time to create, as you have to first find the tweets you want to collect via search, by adding links, or by pulling them from a specific account or your favorites. That could have put off some users, leading to the feature\u2019s more minimal adoption.<\/p>\n

Twitter first began testing<\/a> a replacement for the Moments tab with a small percentage of its users over the past few months, and found that people liked Explore better because it was easier to find the news, what\u2019s trending, and what\u2019s currently popular. The results of those early tests encouraged Twitter to roll the feature out more broadly.<\/p>\n

Explore\u2019s tab will actually shift out of the middle position that Moments once held in\u00a0the bottom navigation bar. This center spot will now feature Notifications instead, with Explore just to the left.<\/p>\n

The new section will give Twitter a better way to highlight Moments or live video, as it includes a larger header which can feature either of these items.<\/p>\n

Below that is the \u201cTrending Now\u201d section, followed by \u201cToday\u2019s Moments,\u201d and then an \u201cExplore All\u201d area where you can delve into specific categories like News, Sports, Entertainment or Fun.<\/p>\n

In addition, it gives Twitter a way to promote live video \u2013 something it helped to pioneer on social through the launch of Periscope<\/a>. But in recent days, Twitter added\u00a0live video streaming directly in\u00a0its main application<\/a>, which has some wondering if Periscope will\u00a0be excised from Twitter, too \u2013 especially given\u00a0that the\u00a0company passed its developer platform Fabric over to\u00a0Google<\/a>, and shut down its video clip community Vine<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Explore will\u00a0also give Twitter a prominent spot to showcase its live streamed events, like its\u00a0NFL games,\u00a0red carpet pre-shows, and the now numerous\u00a0other news and sports events it continues to bring to its service through a constant stream of partnership deals.<\/p>\n

Before, these events have been more difficult to find, which could have impacted their viewership numbers. Being able to feature them in prominently in Explore will likely bring in more live stream viewers.<\/p>\n

Overall,\u00a0this change makes sense in terms of usability because it centralizes access to all the features that help\u00a0you find out what\u2019s happening now<\/em> \u2013 and for a real-time network like Twitter, that feels like a better fit than Moments.<\/p>\n
