The Cloud Native Computing Foundation<\/a> (CNCF), the open source group that\u2019s also the home of the popular Kubernetes container management system, today announced that it has added Linkered<\/a> as its fifth hosted project. Linkerd\u00a0(pronounced linker-DEE), which was incubated at Buoyant<\/a>, follows in the footsteps of other CNCF projects like Kubernetes, Prometheus, OpenTracing and Fluentd.<\/p>\n

\"diagram-individual-instance\"<\/a>The mission of the\u00a0CNCF is to \u201ccreate and drive the adoption of a new computing paradigm\u00a0that is optimized for modern distributed systems environments capable of scaling to tens of\u00a0thousands of self-healing multi-tenant nodes.\u201d<\/p>\n

Linkerd\u2019s role in all of this is offer a so-called \u201cservice mesh\u201d to these modern, generally container-centric, applications. Linkerd is a standalone proxy that, at its core, enables the different services\u00a0to communicate with each other.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo rather than service A talking to service B directly, service A would talk through a Linkerd<\/span> instance (and if we do our jobs right, service A doesn\u2019t actually have to know that it\u2019s going through Linkerd<\/span>),\u201d Buoyant CEO and co-founder William Morgan, who previously worked on similar problems at Twitter, explained to me. \u201cAnd in practice, you\u2019d deploy tens, hundreds, or thousands of Linkerd<\/span> instances, and they\u2019d form a \u2018mesh\u2019 of resilient communication.\u201d\u00a0So just like the kind of proxies you\u2019re already familiar with (think Nginx for handling web traffic), Linkered offers similar features for internal traffic.<\/p>\n

Morgan argues that this is becoming especially important now that modern applications often don\u2019t just call a few different service (web server – app – database), but maybe a dozen microservices. \u201d Our fundamental belief is that, in this world of modern application architectures, the requirement for resilient applications becomes a requirement for resilient service communication,\u201d Morgan said.<\/p>\n

Besides forming a language-agnostic messaging layer, Linkered also offers load balancing, failure and latency handling and other services that all aim to keep microservice-based applications responsive.<\/p>\n

Buoyant has raised about $3.5 million so far. Linkered is its flagship open-source tools, but its main focus is Helium, a service that promises to give enterprises insights and control over their cloud-native applications.<\/p>\n

Why did the company donate Linkerd\u00a0to the CNCF? Morgan told me that the kind of companies that are most likely to get value out of the project are exactly those that are already trying to run \u201ccloud native\u201d environments. \u201cAlso, and this was really important to us, as a startup that is trying to balance a) having an open source project that provides concrete value, has a thriving community, and is viable as a standalone product (i.e. doesn\u2019t feel like crippleware); while also b) building a business that can be profitable, can attract top talent, and can solve critical infrastructure issues for other companies \u2014 the CNCF is very open to this duality and, like us, believes that you can do both, and you can do both well,\u201d Morgan added.<\/p>\n
