Twitter just can\u2019t seem to let go of Vine. The company announced<\/a> last fall it would close the video-sharing community site and its accompanying mobile applications, which it then did just days ago<\/a>. But it also has taken several steps to ensure that the content created in Vine would not be lost, by offering tools to export videos, both online and in its app. Today, in another move to preserve Vine content, Twitter has launched an online archive of Vine videos<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 basically a static website containing all the posts made from 2013 through 2016.<\/p>\n

Typically, when a company makes a decision to end support for an under-performing product, it announces a closure date and then shuts everything down. In the best-case scenario, the company will also alert users to the change and will give them a way to extract their data. A few companies have even directed users to alternative services they can use instead, after the shutdown.<\/p>\n

But in Vine\u2019s case, Twitter can\u2019t seem to fully let go.<\/p>\n

Initially, the company made an announcement that implied the Vine site would be closed, and the app removed from the various app stores. But then Twitter said\u00a0Vine\u2019s app would merely transition to the more utilitarian Vine Camera app<\/a>, which rolled out this week.<\/p>\n

It also started looping short videos<\/a> on Twitter itself in the Vine style. The change targeted only those under 6.5 seconds in length \u2014 the same length as once supported on Vine.<\/p>\n

Now Twitter says it\u2019s launching a Vine archive on the old Vine website. Similar to Vine\u2019s video social network, the archive will organize the videos by genre \u2014 like animals, art, comedy, edits, music dance, sports and weird, for example.<\/p>\n

In addition to the videos themselves, some metadata has also been preserved, including the number of likes, revines and loops the video received, along with the original posting date, title and the creator\u2019s username.<\/p>\n

The site\u2019s \u201cCommunity section\u201d highlights some of the creators\u2019 best work, like the \u201cmost revined fail,\u201d \u201cmost looped comedy edit,\u201d \u201cmost liked,\u201d \u201cmost liked animal\u201d and other superlatives.<\/p>\n

A creator spotlight section, meanwhile, lets you click to see some of the top Viners\u2019 archives.<\/p>\n

Says the company in a blog post<\/a> announcing the new site, \u201cthe Vine archive is a\u00a0time capsule.\u201d<\/p>\n

But the move is also\u00a0enough to make you wonder: Twitter, if you loved Vine this much, why even kill it in the first place?<\/p>\n

Instead of ending Vine, it\u00a0would have been better\u00a0if Twitter had learned how to integrate video and community into its main platform, allowing Vine to serve as a feeder of sorts, or at least a better connected offshoot than it once was. As TechCrunch\u2019s Josh Constine recently noted<\/a>, Twitter has the potential to serve as the hub for quick videos, and is a natural place to view clips that you wouldn\u2019t see on YouTube, Instagram or Facebook.<\/p>\n

But alas, instead of figuring out how to leverage Vine,\u00a0Twitter closed up shop. The Vine archive remains as\u00a0the digital gravestone for the site that could have been.<\/p>\n
