Data governance and management startup\u00a0Collibra<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 originally founded in Belgium but now based out of New York to help businesses in sectors like finance and healthcare to manage and comply with data retention policies \u2014 has raised $50 million in its latest round of funding.<\/p>\n

The company is not disclosing the valuation, but a $650 million figure is being\u00a0publicly reported<\/a> in at least one database. Some insiders dispute that figure as too high, however.<\/p>\n

All that we\u2019ve been able to squeeze out so far is that \u201cthere is a significant<\/b> increase in our valuation following this round\u201d (bolding theirs). It brings the total raised by the company to just $75 million to date.<\/p>\n

This latest round is notable\u00a0for a couple of reasons, one because of who\u2019s doing the investing and one because of what it points to in the wider market for enterprise IT:<\/p>\n

The Series C is being led by ICONIQ Capital<\/a>, the somewhat under-the-radar firm<\/a> that acts both as an investment fund and family office for the likes of the\u00a0Zuckerbergs, Sheryl Sandberg, Reid Hofmann and Jack Dorsey.<\/p>\n

Others in this round include Battery Ventures and previous investors\u00a0Dawn Capital, Index Ventures, and Newion Investments. Although Collibra is now based out of NYC, its roots are in Belgium. This would make it ICONIQ\u2019s second disclosed investment in a startup from the\u00a0Lowlands, after the company put funding into Dutch startup\u00a0Adyen in 2015<\/a>.<\/p>\n

According to Collibra, this Series C\u00a0will be used to continue to expand its business, which is helping companies verify and manage their data.<\/p>\n

\u201cBig data\u201d has been the term du jour<\/em> in the enterprise software space for at least the past two years\u2026 the phrase has become so over-used that it\u2019s almost a punch line.<\/p>\n

However, behind the jargon is a hard fact that data is important. It\u2019s good for businesses to know where their data comes from, how reliable it is, and how best to use it.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s the problem that Collibra purports to solve. Services that it covers includes\u00a0compliance\u00a0with BCBS 239<\/a>,\u00a0CCAR MRAs<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0GDPR<\/a>; demonstrating\u00a0data protection and security<\/a>; fixing\u00a0bad data<\/a>;\u00a0analytics<\/a>; and\u00a0data discovery.<\/a><\/p>\n

\u201cData\u2019s day has come. And with that, organizations have recognized that data can only be leveraged as a strategic resource to the extent it can be accessed and, most important, trusted,\u201d said Felix Van de Maele, CEO and co-founder of Collibra, in a statement. \u201cThis Series C funding round from two of the industry\u2019s most highly respected and successful investment firms is tremendous validation of the increased adoption of data governance as a corporate discipline.\u201d<\/p>\n

It\u2019s also an area that investors clearly see as an opportunity in the wider framework of enterprise services.<\/p>\n

\u201cCollibra was born to address a real problem: how enterprises can meaningfully leverage data to transform their businesses,\u201d said ICONIQ\u2019s Matt Jacobson, who will join the board with this investment. \u201cWe have been very impressed with how large, sophisticated customers have spoken about the strength of Collibra and its emerging market leadership.
