Salesforce announced today that it plans to open an\u00a0engineering and innovation hub in the Seattle area, greatly expanding\u00a0its presence there.<\/p>\n

Company co-founder Parker Harris says the office, which is located in the\u00a0Nine Two Nine Office Tower in Bellevue,\u00a0will be dedicated mostly to supporting the company\u2019s artificial intelligence initiative, introduced last Fall, which was\u00a0dubbed Einstein<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Harris\u00a0indicated that the Bellevue\u00a0office, which currently has 250 employees will double in size in the coming months as they hire more engineers and support personnel to fill out the office. While the team is based in Bellevue, it will work closely with the Einstein development teams in San Francisco.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s just a practical matter, according to Harris. It\u2019s getting increasingly difficult to find engineering talent in the Bay Area, and the company is growing rapidly, making it even more challenging. At its most recent earnings report, Salesforce indicated it was on a $10 billion run rate<\/a>, making it\u00a0one of the fastest growing enterprise\u00a0software companies in the world<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Salesforce bought a number of companies in 2016 including MetaMind<\/a>, which it acquired last April for $32.8 million. With that purchase,\u00a0artificial intelligence researcher and\u00a0MetaMind CEO Richard Socher, became the company\u2019s Chief Scientist after the acquisition. Harris says Socher will have a big role when it comes to staffing the Bellevue office and will work with the teams there from his home base in San Francisco.<\/p>\n

The company is not just offering these engineers the chance to work on the company\u2019s artificial intelligence\u00a0platform.\u00a0They are also\u00a0hoping to lure them to a comfortable workspace with mindfulness areas and large lounges, designed to promote collaboration and creativity among the Bellevue engineering teams.<\/p>\n

Of course, it\u2019s probably not a coincidence that the Seattle\/Bellevue area is also home to Amazon and Microsoft, two Salesforce frenemies. While the cloud CRM giant partners with each of these companies, it also competes with them too in a complex relationship. Harris admitted that it\u2019s possible\u00a0they will be able to attract employees from the two big Seattle tech behemoths, but plans to recruit from a variety of sources including the local universities.<\/p>\n

For now, the company claims that it\u2019s nothing more than\u00a0trying to gain a bigger foothold in the area, as it faces a talent shortage at home in San Francisco. That it allows them\u00a0to plant a stake in the ground in the backyards of two tech rivals is also probably a nice bonus.<\/p>\n
