Facebook is expanding its trial of measures\u00a0to combat fake news beyond\u00a0the U.S. for the first time \u2014 and will shortly be rolling out\u00a0the updates in\u00a0Germany.\u00a0In a blog post<\/a> yesterday the company\u00a0said it will\u00a0be introducing the updates to the market \u201cin the coming weeks\u201d.<\/p>\n Last month<\/a>\u00a0Facebook\u2019s VP of News Feed, Adam Mosseri, detailed the company\u2019s plans for fighting fake news being shared and amplified on the\u00a0platform.<\/p>\n This followed a storm of criticism about\u00a0Facebook\u2019s role in the US presidential election, with many commentators pointing the finger of blame<\/a> at the social media giant for not doing enough to stop the spread of\u00a0bogus information\u00a0via its News Feed. Not least because, according to a 2016 Pew study<\/a>,\u00a0a majority of US adults get news via social media.<\/p>\n Founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg also finally conceded\u00a0the company has \u201ca greater responsibility than just building technology that information flows through\u201d, rowing back from his previously stated position that Facebook is a technology company, not a media firm.<\/p>\n \u201cWhile we don\u2019t write the news stories you read and share, we also recognize we\u2019re more than just a distributor of news,\u201d he wrote<\/a> in a status update on December 15. \u201cWe\u2019re a new kind of platform for public discourse \u2014 and that means we have a new kind of responsibility to enable people to have the most meaningful conversations, and to build a space where people can be informed.\u201d<\/p>\n Measures Facebook has been\u00a0testing\u00a0in the U.S. to fight fake news \u2014 and which will soon be arriving in Germany \u2014\u00a0focus on three areas:<\/p>\n Why is Germany being prioritized? Mostly repurposed pro-Trump accounts. pic.twitter.com\/mlqQxFmf1k<\/a><\/p>\n \u2014 Angela Merkel (@Queen_Europe) December 20, 2016<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n In recent years the German government\u00a0has also been critical of Facebook\u2019s response to another problem<\/a>: the spread of hate speech via its platform.<\/p>\n In Germany the\u00a0fact checking organization Facebook is\u00a0working with to tackle fake news is Correctiv<\/a> \u2014 which does not (yet) appear to be a signatory of Poynter\u2019s code<\/a>. Facebook says its external fact\u00a0checkers in Germany are \u201csigning the Poynter guidelines\u201d. We\u2019ve reached out to Correctiv\u00a0with questions and will update this post with any response.\u00a0<\/p>\n Update:\u00a0<\/strong>A spokesman for Correctiv confirmed it is in the process of joining Poynter\u2019s, noting: \u201cThis takes some time due to technical circumstances (they remodeled their website).\u201d\u00a0Asked how it will be determining which stories to flag, he said: \u201cWe are in the first phase of this project and still do not know, how to handle this issues. But I\u2019m sure, we will soon have answers.\u201d In terms of which local publishers Correctiv trusts, he named Spiegel<\/em>, S\u00fcddeztsche Zeitung<\/em> and FAZ<\/em> as three examples.<\/p>\n Facebook says posts identified as fraudulent by Correctiv will be badged with a warning label that identifies them as untrustworthy, although badged posts\u00a0will still include a link to the suspect article, along with a justification for it being flagged as fake.<\/p>\n The company\u00a0further notes that messages classified as untrustworthy may also appear later in the newsfeed. And while it will still be possible for users to share posts labeled as untrustworthy it will not be possible to share the original content without the \u2018suspect content\u2019 warning.<\/p>\n \u201cWe will learn from these tests in Germany and will further improve and expand our tools over time,\u201d says\u00a0Facebook <\/a>in a blog post on the launch (translated from Germany via Google Translate).<\/p>\n \u201cIt is important to us that posts and news posted on Facebook are reliable. We are pleased with this progress, but we know there is still a lot to be done. We continue to work on this challenge and will introduce these innovations in other countries in the near future,\u201d it adds.<\/p>\n After Facebook announced its plan to lean heavily on the expertise of third party fact checkers to help police the veracity of News Feed content \u2014 and specifically on those who have signed up to Poynter\u2019s principles \u2014 the latter organization is overhauling its vetting process for signatories. It\u00a0notes on its website<\/a>\u00a0that it won\u2019t be adding any new signatories until it has these\u00a0new procedures in place.<\/p>\n \u201cWe conducted an interim desk review of the U.S. fact-checkers and will ask all signatories to produce a full report within the next few weeks.
