Debugging startup Backtrace I\/O<\/a> was launched to solve a real problem that its founders faced when they were engineers at ad-tech company AppNexus \u2014 at least according to Backtrace CEO and co-founder Abel Mathew.<\/p>\n

Mathew told me Backtrace aims to \u201csolve the process of debugging,\u201d something that most companies tackle by \u201ccobbling together very old, outdated solutions\u201d or by building their own tools.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s part of the reason why developers spend 50 percent of their time debugging,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s a huge cost to the industry \u2026 That cost is significantly felt when you have developers not using the right solutions.\u201d<\/p>\n

The company is announcing that it has raised $5 million in Series A funding, bringing its total funding to $6.1 million. The round was led by Amplify Partners, with participation from Work\u00ad-Bench and previous investors Rally Ventures and Tribeca Venture Partners. Amplify\u2019s Sunil Dhaliwa is joining Backtrace\u2019s board of directors.<\/p>\n

\u201cSoftware won\u2019t eat the world if engineers are held back by debugging technology conceived during the Cold War,\u201d Dhaliwal said in the funding release. \u201cBacktrace makes software better by automating this critical capability for an era where continuous delivery, web\u00ad-scale deployments, and enterprise-\u00adclass reliability will be the norm for all software developers.\u201d<\/p>\n

Backtrace features include searchable error reports, a database of all crashes, debugging assistants, automated alerts and more. Asked for an example of how Backtrace is different, Mathew said that if an application crashes, a normal debugging tool might allow you to perform a stack trace<\/a>, but Backtrace will \u201cgive me more context like variable information \u2014 you need to understand environmental information. \u2026 We allow you to explore that data at scale efficiently.\u201d<\/p>\n

Customers include Mathew\u2019s old employer AppNexus, as well as MediaMath, Circonus and Fastly. He said the company has been focusing on \u201cdemanding software in industries like enterprise software and Internet infrastructure,\u201d which usually means working with large enterprises. But it could be used by anyone building software.<\/p>\n

\u201cFrom the small startup to the single, individual indie video game developers, Backtrace fits a need there,\u201d he said. \u201cWherever software is, it\u2019s inevitably going to have an error, inevitably have a bug. Backtrace is trying to solve the problem of managing and analyzing their errors at scale.\u201d<\/p>\n
