I can’t tell you how many times I’ve had someone ask me how they turn off their new iPhone<\/a>. When Apple removed the home button from the front of the phone, the way we trigger Siri<\/a> was also moved. Instead of the side button acting as a power button, it now triggers the digital assistant.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The key here is to remember that you have to use a combination of buttons to turn your phone off now. If you can’t remember the order of which buttons to press and when, there’s a software button buried in the settings app that turns off your phone.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Below I’ll walk you through the mysterious button combination to turn your iPhone off, another button combo that will restart a problematic iPhone, and, finally, where you can find the software button to turn it off.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Turn off your iPhone 11 or iPhone 12<\/h2>\n

Alright, so here’s what you need to do to get the power menu to show up. On your iPhone 11<\/a> or iPhone 12<\/a>, you’ll need to press and hold the volume down<\/strong> button and the side button<\/strong> at the same time. It won’t take long — just a couple of seconds. You’ll feel a haptic vibration and then see the power slider on the top of your screen, as well as a Medical ID and an Emergency SOS slider<\/a> near the bottom.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Slide the power switch from left to right and your phone will power off. To turn it back on, press and hold the side button until you see the Apple logo on your iPhone’s screen.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Hard restart a struggling iPhone 11 or iPhone 12<\/h2>\n

If your phone is running slow or is frozen and you can’t get the power menu to show up, you can initiate a hard restart by using a button sequence<\/a> Apple introduced with the iPhone X.<\/p>\n

Start by pressing and releasing the volume up button<\/strong>, then press and release the volume down button<\/strong>. Finally, press and hold the side button<\/strong>. A new power menu will show up, forgoing all of the medical and emergency info. But instead of sliding the switch, keep holding the side button until you see the Apple logo appear on your phone.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Don’t worry, a hard restart to your phone doesn’t erase any data or information. But it does, more often than not, fix whatever issue you’re experiencing.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Power down your phone using the Settings app<\/h2>\n

If you just can’t commit the button combination to memory, maybe this will be easier. Open the Settings<\/strong> app and go to General<\/strong> and scroll all the way to the bottom of the screen. There you’ll find a button labeled Shut Down<\/strong>. Tap it, then slide the power off toggle over to turn your phone off.\u00a0<\/p>\n

That wasn’t too bad, as it? To be honest, I mostly use a hard restart to power my phone off and on. Since it’s my number one troubleshooting method and no data is lost, it can’t hurt.\u00a0<\/p>\n
