Segment<\/a> helps businesses manage all their data<\/a> from services like Google Analytics, Mixpanel and Salesforce \u2014 and send that data to a variety of destinations, whether it\u2019s\u00a0an attribution product or a data warehouse.<\/p>\n

The company announced yesterday<\/a> that it\u2019s expanding its offerings by integrating with BigQuery, Google\u2019s data warehousing service. This might seem like a pretty small announcement, especially because Segment already supported other warehousing products \u2014 specifically Postgres and Amazon\u2019s Redshift \u2014 but CEO Peter Reinhardt suggested that this reflects a broader shift in the \u201ccloud wars.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve noticed a real upsurge in demand for BigQuery,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s the first real threat to Redshift.\u201d<\/p>\n

Not every one of Segment\u2019s 7,500 customers uses\u00a0its data warehousing options, but Reinhardt said that \u201calmost 100 percent\u201d of its enterprise customers\u00a0do, and there\u2019s also significant usage on the\u00a0self-service side. He estimated that data warehousing\u00a0customers were\u00a0split 50-50 between Postgres and Amazon before \u2014 but after a little more than a month of beta testing, BigQuery had already claimed 10 percent of the total.<\/p>\n

Among BigQuery\u2019s advantages, according to Reinhardt, are the fact that it can be simpler to use, and its pricing structure may be more appealing to smaller businesses.<\/p>\n
