Two-billion member social network <a href=\"javascript:void(0)\">Facebook<\/a>\u00a0is no different. For years, Facebook has not only relied on open-source, it&#8217;s been an <a href=\"javascript:void(0)\">active contributor to major open-source projects<\/a>. These include the <a href=\"javascript:void(0)\">React<\/a> JavaScript library; the <a href=\"javascript:void(0)\">Open Compute Project<\/a>, which open sources data-center hardware; and <a href=\"javascript:void(0)\">Linux&#8217;s cGroup2<\/a> container software. Now Facebook is joining <a href=\"javascript:void(0)\">The Linux Foundation<\/a> membership at the Platinum level.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s a natural move. While Facebook&#8217;s open-source group has long been a member, the main company is finally joining the Foundation at its highest level. As a Platinum member, Facebook&#8217;s head of Open Source Kathy Kam will join the Linux Foundation&#8217;s board. Kam is a 20-year engineering, product management, and developer relations leader with vast open-source management experience. She&#8217;d previously worked at Google and Microsoft.<\/p>\n<p>While Facebook has been criticized for how it deals with <a href=\"javascript:void(0)\">privacy<\/a> and <a href=\"javascript:void(0)\">politics<\/a>, it has impeccable open-source credentials. It was already the lead contributor of many Linux Foundation-hosted projects, such as <a href=\"javascript:void(0)\">Presto<\/a>, <a href=\"javascript:void(0)\">GraphQL<\/a>, <a href=\"javascript:void(0)\">Osquery<\/a>, and <a href=\"javascript:void(0)\">ONNX<\/a>. The company also employs many Linux kernel key developers and maintainers.<br \/>\u00a0<br \/>In addition to that, Facebook can boast of numerous important open-source projects such as:\u00a0<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\">Facebook Connectivity<\/a> and the open-source\u00a0<a href=\"javascript:void(0)\">Telecom Infra Project (TIP) Foundation<\/a>, which is bringing fast, reliable internet to underserved populations. The related <a href=\"javascript:void(0)\">Magma<\/a> open-source project enables telecom operators to easily deploy mobile networks in hard-to-reach areas &#8212; reducing the costs of building and maintaining telecom networks. \u00a0<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p>Facebook created a unique dataset of over 100,000 videos and launched the\u00a0<a href=\"javascript:void(0)\">Deepfake Detection Challenge<\/a> in order to accelerate the development of new ways to detect deepfake videos.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p>Facebook&#8217;s\u00a0<a href=\"javascript:void(0)\">Data for Good<\/a> program enables geographic data to be shared with the aim of addressing some of the world&#8217;s greatest humanitarian issues, including <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\">COVID-19<\/a><\/span>. \u00a0<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p>By creating and sustaining <a href=\"javascript:void(0)\">PyTorch<\/a>, Facebook also accelerates machine learning&#8217;s pace of innovation.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p>Facebook&#8217;s<a href=\"javascript:void(0)\"> React.js<\/a> library powers many popular websites and has become the standard for frontend web development due to its simplicity and flexibility.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>In working with Github to sponsor <a href=\"javascript:void(0)\">Major League Hacking&#8217;s<\/a> <a href=\"javascript:void(0)\">first-ever remote open source fellowship<\/a>, Facebook hopes to create a trend of empowering a new generation of diverse open-source contributors.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Kam, for one, is very happy that Facebook is joining The Linux Foundation.
