AWS held its annual re:Invent customer conference this week<\/a> \u2014 and as it revealed one new service after another, one thing became clear: the company with a marketshare lead that is by Gartner\u2019s estimate 10\u00a0times bigger than its 14 closest competitors<\/a>\u00a0combined, has no plans to slow down or rest on its laurels.<\/p>\n

If that market lead isn\u2019t enough to shake up the competition, according to data from Gartner, AWS S3 storage is 1.6 times as large in terms of pure data stored<\/a> on its servers, as all the other object storage services in their Magic Quadrant combined.<\/p>\n

All of this is bad news for competitors like IBM, Google and Microsoft (not to mention, Oracle and Alibaba), but AWS isn\u2019t just dominating because it was first (although that\u2019s part of it), it\u2019s also continuing to innovate at an astonishing rate, adding around 1000 new features every single day<\/em>, according to a chart posted by CEO Andy Jassy during his re:Invent keynote.<\/p>\n

The question is, how does the competition catch up in the face of this market dominance and pure power to innovate? Dharmesh Thakker, a general partner with Battery Ventures says one saving grace is fear of vendor lock-in. Nobody is going to put all their eggs in one basket anymore, nor is he about to dismiss Google or Microsoft just yet, two companies with\u00a0triple digit year-over-year growth rates<\/a> in the cloud.<\/p>\n

\u201cMicrosoft Azure is a viable contender, and Google certainly knows how to manage infrastructure better than most tech companies, but the gap is significant and only growing by the day,\u201d Thakker told TechCrunch. While Google and Microsoft can use their deep pockets to keep up on the innovation front, it\u2019s harder to overcome the data disparity.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhile Microsoft and Google can hire and acquire their way through the software stack to close the gap with AWS, the growing data-gravity gap \u2014 the amount of data managed by S3 which natively uses AWS services \u2014 will make it very hard for competitors to catch up,\u201d he pointed out.<\/p>\n

Ray Wang, principal analyst at Constellation Research, isn\u2019t ready to cede the enterprise to AWS just yet. He says that Microsoft and Oracle have a leg up in the enterprise, simply because they are comfortable and familiar, and they have a strong presence already. Moving from on-prem to the cloud with familiar tools is less daunting than moving everything to AWS, in his view.<\/p>\n

One area where Dan Sholnick, a partner at Trinity Ventures, sees AWS running behind is artificial intelligence, which is part of a huge transformation in how developers will be\u00a0building software moving forward. The company tried to close that gap with some announcements this week<\/a>, but it has a ways to go to catch up with Microsoft and Google, which have a head start in this important area.<\/p>\n

\u201cAmazon is behind in AI and they know it. They are taking the infrastructure and development underlying [the Amazon Echo]\u00a0and democratizing it. Amazon is making a big push with Rekognition, Lex and Polly, [services announced this week],\u201d Sholnick said.<\/p>\n

Of course for every new feature, there is an equal reaction from the competition, regardless of who leads. The question for everyone at this point is can anyone actually catch AWS? It has to be a formidable\u00a0task, no matter how fast you\u2019re growing. But with an IT infrastructure market potential of $300 billion, nobody is throwing up the white flag\u00a0just yet.<\/p>\n

As we\u2019ve learned, things can change quickly\u00a0in technology, even when there is an obvious and dominant market leader. Just because AWS has a big advantage now, doesn\u2019t mean it always will, but\u00a0as we saw this week, it shows\u00a0no signs of slowing down,\u00a0as it continues to put intense pressure on its competition.<\/p>\n
