There were a lot of jokes and comments at Oracle\u2019s expense today at the AWS re:Invent conference, but perhaps the boldest statement came when AWS announced it \u00a0was adding PostgresSQL support to the AWS Aurora database, making it\u00a0easier to move an Oracle database to the AWS cloud.<\/p>\n

Even as Oracle makes its own move to the cloud, it is still held up as the prime example of the prototypical legacy vendor. As AWS CEO Andy Jassy said without mentioning Oracle by name, \u201cCommercial grade databases are proprietary, expensive and require vendor lock-in. Builders don\u2019t like this and it\u2019s why enterprises have been moving as fast as they can to open source [options] like MariaDB, MySQL\u00a0and PostgresSQL,\u201d Jassy told the re:Invent audience. But moving came with a performance trade-off until Amazon answered\u00a0when it announced\u00a0Aurora two years ago<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe built Amazon Aurora with speed and availability of commercial databases with the pricing\u00a0and [freedom] of open source,\u201d Jassy said. What\u2019s more, he claimed they delivered that at a tenth of the price. Up until today, the company was only offering this option to MySQL users, but there was a huge demand for PostgresSQL, especially since it is compatible with Oracle RDS databases, which many enterprise customers are using.<\/p>\n

To answer that demand, the company announced a preview of Amazon Aurora PostgreSQL-Compatible Edition<\/a>. When you\u2019re creating your Aurora database instance, you simply chose the PostgresSQL option, then specify your database details and you\u2019re good to go.<\/p>\n

Jassy made it sound like making the move from Oracle, now that Aurora\u00a0had the PostgresSQL support would be a fairly simply matter because of the semantic similarities between PostgresSQL and the Oracle database. The proof will be in the testing though.<\/p>\n

Al Hilwa, an analyst at IDC, says the Oracle support is all well and good, but it\u2019s about supporting a more powerful\u00a0database. \u201cPostgresSQL\u00a0is a hugely popular database which is much more powerful than MySQL. That it supports multi-versioning like Oracle is icing on the cake,\u201d Hilwa told TechCrunch.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s worth noting that Oracle believes it\u2019s in the best position to help customers move to the cloud by offering its own cloud versions of its database products. It\u2019s also worth noting that Holger Mueller, an analyst at Constellation Research, pointed out on Twitter<\/a>, that while AWS was boasting about 14,000 database customers, it was \u201ca skirmish in the database wars,\u201d meaning it still has a ways to go to catch Oracle \u2014 all jokes and comments aside.
