But, as a business, <a href=\"javascript:void(0)\">Mapzen failed in 2018<\/a>. <a href=\"javascript:void(0)\">Mapzen&#8217;s code and service lived on<\/a> as a <a href=\"javascript:void(0)\">Linux Foundation<\/a> Project.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Now, it&#8217;s moved on to the <a href=\"javascript:void(0)\">Urban Computing Foundation (UCF)<\/a>, another Linux Foundation group with more resources. UCF is devoted to helping create smarter cities, multimodal transportation, and autonomous vehicles.<\/p>\n<p>In the UCF, Mapzen will have the support of such members like Facebook, Google, and Uber. There, its developers can collaborate on and build a common set of open-source tools connecting cities, autonomous vehicles, and smart infrastructure.\u00a0<br \/>It joins the existing UCF project <a href=\"javascript:void(0)\">Kepler.gl<\/a>, an open-source geospatial analysis tool for Big Data.\u00a0<br \/>\u00a0<br \/>Mapzen is made up of several <a href=\"javascript:void(0)\">MIT-licensed<\/a> projects. These include real-time search, rendering, navigation, and data. These include: \u00a0<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\">Pelias<\/a>: Distributed full-text geographic search engine<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\">Tangram<\/a>: Libraries for rendering 2D and 3D maps with WebGL\/OpenGL ES and vector tiles<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\">Tilezen<\/a>: Libraries to generate vector tiles for global map display<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\">Transitland<\/a>: Community-edited data service aggregating transit networks across metropolitan and rural areas around the world<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\">Valhalla<\/a>: Global, multi-modal routing engine for turn-by-turn navigation services<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\">Who&#8217;s on First<\/a>: Gazetteer or a big list of places, each with a stable identifier and descriptive properties<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&#8220;We are extremely excited to welcome the Mapzen family of projects to the Urban Computing Foundation,&#8221; said Travis Gorkin, Uber&#8217;s engineering manager of data visualization.
