Veteran security firm Kaspersky Lab is looking at\u00a0launching a real-time encrypted back-up service for social media users to store their data outside the walled garden of Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and Google+.<\/p>\n

At this point it\u2019s testing how much appetite there might be for such a service \u2014 launching a website<\/a> with details of the potential app, which it\u2019s calling FFForget, where people can sign up to express interest and provide feedback on the sorts of features they\u2019d like to see. Any beta launch would not be before early 2017, it says.<\/p>\n

Kaspersky\u2019s\u00a0thesis is that while social media remains wildly popular there are also widespread feelings of disaffection with how social giants\u00a0such as Facebook monopolize people\u2019s\u00a0time and attention, and how they lock users in by merit of holding\u00a0both their friendship networks and their personal data.<\/p>\n

Kaspersky\u00a0commissioned its own research on the topic, polling more than 4,800 web users across\u00a0nine languages, and says it found\u00a0a majority of respondents (nearly 78 percent) reported they had\u00a0already considered ditching\u00a0social networks. While more than one-third (39 percent) reckon\u00a0they are wasting time on social networks.<\/p>\n

The poll was conducted before the current controversy about\u00a0the impact on democracy of social networks helping to spread misinformation\u00a0online<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 but that\u00a0could stoke further disaffection with tech platforms which\u00a0algorithmically filter content to maximize user engagement and ad clicks.<\/p>\n

FFForget is envisioned as a fix for the data lock-in issue \u2014 by providing a mechanism to free users of\u00a0major\u00a0social networking platforms\u00a0from the fear\u00a0of leaving their information\u00a0behind should they\u00a0decide to pull the plug and close their accounts. Kaspersky found around one-fifth (21 percent) of survey respondents worry about losing things like their photos should they quit a network.<\/p>\n

A lot more\u00a0respondents (62 percent) were concerned about losing contact with friends. Although, for some of these social platforms, you could argue the\u00a0friendship networks in question involve a lot of weak bonds \u2014\u00a0when you consider how\u00a0sprawling these sorts of quasi-public social networks tend to be, and how many\u00a0users can be\u00a0seen pruning connections on such services (rather than seeking to preserve every person\u00a0they ever added), versus, say, the relative intimacy of mobile messaging apps.<\/p>\n

However, the public-following element of a network like Instagram is obviously also a draw for those posting content in the hopes of building an audience. As ever with social networks, it\u2019s a case of horses for courses \u2014 and the FFForget service clearly won\u2019t appeal to everyone.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s worth noting that some social networks do already let users export data. Twitter, for example, has an option in settings for users to \u201crequest your archive\u201d \u2014 which creates\u00a0a\u00a0downloadable file of all your tweets. However, it\u2019s a manually triggered process that can take as long as a few days before the file is available.<\/p>\n

Facebook also lets users download an archive<\/a> of their info \u2014 but, again, it\u2019s necessary to manually request this. Whereas\u00a0the FFForget\u2019s paid subscription service would be real-time, letting a user close an\u00a0account\u00a0immediately, should they wish, without having to also jettison\u00a0their data.<\/p>\n

The premium version of the service (envisaged costing $1.99 per month) would also offer a content browsing and organizing interface, and real-time sync API access to allow for access to a user\u2019s social network\u00a0content to third-party apps and services of their choosing \u2014 again freeing up some of their locked-in social media data for alternative uses.<\/p>\n

A freemium version is also planned, with fewer features, and what\u2019s billed as \u201cbasic encryption\u201d versus the premium service\u2019s \u201cmilitary-grade encryption of your choice, with DES, AES, Blowfish.\u201d<\/p>\n

A spokeswoman for Kaspersky confirmed data backed up via the freemium version would still be client-side encrypted \u2014 so there\u2019s no intention of Kaspersky trying to data-mine users\u2019 social networking archives. On the contrary, the service is billed as having \u201cno tracking, no ads.\u201d<\/p>\n

As well as positioning FFForget as a fix for\u00a0social network fatigue, Kaspersky touts\u00a0it as a way to safeguard social network data against an\u00a0account being\u00a0closed or taken over by hackers.<\/p>\n
