On the one hand, you\u2019ve got Twitter <\/a> CEO Jack Dorsey lamenting the \u201clike\u201d button\u2019s existence<\/a>, and threatening to just kill the thing off entirely<\/a> for incentivizing the wrong kind of behavior. On the other hand, you have twttr \u2014 Twitter\u2019s prototype app<\/a> where the company is testing new concepts including, most recently, a way to make liking tweets even easier than before.<\/p>\n

Confused about Twitter\u2019s product direction? Apparently, so is the company.<\/p>\n

In the latest version of the twttr prototype, released on Thursday, users are now able to swipe right to left on any tweet in order to \u201clike\u201d it. Previously, this gesture only worked on tweets in conversation threads, where the engagement buttons had been hidden. With the change, however, the swipe works anywhere \u2014 including the Home timeline, the Notifications tab, your Profile page, or even within Twitter Search results. In other words, it becomes a more universal gesture.<\/p>\n

This makes sense because once you got used to swiping right, it was confusing that the gesture didn\u2019t work in some places, but did in others. Still, it\u2019s odd to see the company doubling down on making \u201clikes\u201d easier to use \u2014 and even rolling out a feature that could increase user engagement with the \u201cLike\u201d button \u2014 given Jack Dorsey\u2019s repeated comments about his distaste for \u201clikes\u201d and the conversations around the button\u2019s removal.<\/p>\n

Of course, twttr is not supposed to be Dorsey\u2019s vision. Instead, it\u2019s meant to be a new experiment in product development, where users and Twitter\u2019s product teams work together,<\/a> in the open, to develop, test, and then one day officially launch new features for Twitter.<\/p>\n

For the time being, the app is largely focused on redesigning conversation threads. On Twitter today, these get long and unwieldy, and it\u2019s not always clear who\u2019s talking to who. On twttr, however, threads are nested with a thin line connecting the various posts.<\/p>\n

The app is also rolling out other, smaller tweaks like labels on tweets within conversations that highlight the original \u201cAuthor\u2019s\u201d replies, or if a post comes from someone you\u2019re \u201cfollowing.\u201d<\/p>\n

And, of course, twttr introduced the \u201cswipe to like\u201d gesture.<\/p>\n

While it\u2019s one thing to want to collaborate more directly with the community, it seems strange that twttr is rolling out a feature designed to increase \u2014 not decrease \u2014 engagement with \u201clikes\u201d at this point in time.<\/p>\n

Last August<\/a>, for example, Dorsey said he wanted to redesign key elements of the social network, including the \u201clike\u201d button and the way Twitter displays follower counts.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe most important thing that we can do is we look at the incentives that we\u2019re building into our product,\u201d Dorsey had said at the time. \u201cBecause they do express a point of view of what we want people to do \u2014 and I don\u2019t think they are correct anymore.\u201d<\/p>\n

Soon after, at an industry event<\/a> in October 2018, Dorsey again noted how the \u201clike\u201d button sends the wrong kind of message.<\/p>\n

\u201cRight now we have a big \u2018like\u2019 button with a heart on it, and we\u2019re incentivizing people to want to drive that up,\u201d said Dorsey. \u201cWe have a follower count that was bolded because it felt good twelve years ago, but that\u2019s what people see us saying: that should go up. Is that the right thing?,\u201d he wondered.<\/p>\n

While these comments may have seemed like a little navel-gazing over Twitter\u2019s past,\u00a0a Telegraph report<\/a> about the \u201clike\u201d button\u2019s removal quickly caught fire. It claimed Dorsey had said the \u201clike\u201d button was going to go away entirely, which caused so much user backlash that Twitter comms had to respond. The company said the idea has been discussed, but it wasn\u2019t something happening \u201csoon.\u201d (See above tweet).<\/p>\n

Arguably, the \u201clike\u201d button is appreciated by Twitter\u2019s user base, so it\u2019s not surprising that a gesture that could increase its usage would become something that gets tried out in the community-led twttr prototype app. It\u2019s worth noting, however, how remarkably different the development process is when it\u2019s about what Twitter\u2019s users want, not the CEO.<\/p>\n

Hey, twttr team? Maybe we can get that \u201cedit\u201d button now?<\/p>\n
