Testing and installation

Following a site consult conducted hand-in-hand with TP-Link’s UK pre-sales engineer, Himanshu Kale, Lytchett Minster built a transparent radio magnitude (RF) map of a site and perceived dual EAP225 APs for analysis purposes.

Given a transparent prophesy of a arrange of pattern that would be needed, these underwent severe contrast by Coombes and his co-worker Darren Bowring, a school’s network manager, to safeguard a APs and controller program could broach what a propagandize needed.

Satisfied with this, they placed an sequence for 86 EAP225 and EAP225 Outdoor APs by TP-Link reseller partner (and preparation specialist) Stone Computers.

“Once we had determined a parameters for what we needed, grouping and designation was easy,” says Coombes. Working around a school’s bustling report – it also hires itself out as a venue for weddings and other events during weekends, and opens a sports comforts to a open out of hours – it took Bowring and Coombes usually 3 weeks to implement all 74 APs.

Thanks to their PoE capabilities, they were means to immigrate many of a APs from corridors into classrooms for best opening and coverage.

Until a aged units were removed, they achieved one-to-one swap-outs with a identical pattern to a aged devices, so that users did not notice a difference. Once a new APs were in place, they were means to activate a new SSIDs – 3 in sum – that use a executive Radius server for entrance authentication.

“We did a process change over one weekend, updated a pattern changes by executive management, then, on Monday morning, a inclination all picked adult those changes and nobody was any a wiser that we’d done them – solely for a fact that they now had a improved signal,” says Coombes.

The organisation is now also means to use entrance control lists to emanate users with vouchers that shorten network entrance during a subnet according to core user group. For example, a ubiquitous guest SSID, used by peripatetic teachers, contractors and visitors, is some-more limited than a staff one, and is accessible usually during propagandize hours.

Out of hours, a apart open entrance SSID kicks in for users of a school’s sports facilities, while during weekends it can be activated according to a predefined report if an eventuality is booked. And this is already proof a draw, says Coombes: “We have a marriage entrance adult after this year where a integrate privately requested Wi-Fi to be means to tide a use for people who couldn’t be there.”

For student access, Lytchett Minster can now make special supplies for a sixth form students in line with an determined move your possess device (BYOD) policy. Because a comparison pupils take some-more shortcoming for their studies, they are authorised to move and bond their possess inclination – nonetheless this is firmly tranquil and provides incompatible levels of entrance according to where on a campus a device is located.

“We now also see incomparable numbers of staff iPads and phones being used for teaching, that improves what we can offer to students as a propagandize since it improves their entrance to online materials,” says Coombes.
