Prisma\u2019s app now supports\u00a0real-time style transfer for livestreaming videos broadcast to the Facebook Live platform.<\/p>\n

\u2018Style transfer\u2019 is the phrase being used to describe popular\u00a0art filter technology which creates a pastiche effect at the touch of a button \u2014 turning a representational photo or video into something more akin to a cartoon or an abstract work of art. So, basically, from selfies to cartoonies.<\/p>\n

The feature is currently only available to Prisma\u2019s\u00a0iOS users, and only for iPhone 7 and 6s owners \u2014 owing to processing constraints given that processing is done locally on the device.<\/p>\n

\u201cNot every smartphone can handle that,\u201d says\u00a0Prisma\u2019s Aram Airapetyan, adding: \u201cWe\u2019re working to bring this to powerful Android smartphones also.\u201d<\/p>\n

iPhone owning Prisma users need to be logged into their Facebook account via the app to make use of the livestreaming feature. After which\u00a0they\u2019re all set to livestream US election result night in an Edvard Munchian Scream<\/a> style \u2014\u00a0which surely\u00a0best reflects the mood of the occasion\u2026<\/p>\n

Prisma co-founder Alexey Moiseenkov\u00a0demoed the real-time style transfer feature late last month<\/a>, the day after\u00a0Facebook showcased its own forthcoming style transfer filter<\/a>\u00a0for Facebook\u00a0Live.<\/p>\n

While Prisma launched in June as an app\u00a0offering style transfer for photos, it added\u00a0support\u00a0for stylizing video<\/a> early last month,\u00a0when it also said it planned to launch animated GIFs next.<\/p>\n

In the event it\u2019s pushed\u00a0for\u00a0adding\u00a0Facebook Live support first \u2014 likely\u00a0spurred on by Facebook\u2019s own interest in style filtering and the risk of a tech giant taking the wind out of its sails. (Facebook has yet to officially launch\u00a0its own style transfer livestreaming feature but is now testing it in certain geographies<\/a>, as well as offering Prisma-style art filters for photos.)<\/p>\n

The plucky startup\u00a0has managed to rack\u00a0up an impressive number of app downloads (~72M globally) since launching in June<\/a>, benefiting from a viral popularity bump when users started sharing its\u00a0art\u00a0filtered photos to Instagram. Although that\u00a0initial download surge looks to have slowed.<\/p>\n

Prisma\u00a0tells TechCrunch\u00a0it has more than two million daily active users at this point, with its best markets being the US, India and Russia. It\u2019s\u00a0currently monetizing the app via branded style filters.<\/p>\n

In a statement\u00a0on today\u2019s\u00a0real-time filter\u00a0launch, Moiseenkov says: \u2019\u2019We are working in a direction that we always considered important. We want to change the way people communicate with each other using the most advanced and new technology. We believe, that even a small company can achieve great results.\u201d<\/p>\n

Top of Prisma\u2019s to-do list now is working on the Android version of the app, including adding offline video processing, it said today.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s also hinting about a move towards turning the app\u00a0into more than just a processing tool \u2014 saying Prisma\u00a0\u201cwill become more social soon\u201d. (Although, back in June, Moiseenkov told TechCrunch the team had no plans to try to \u2018platformize\u2019 the product, saying: \u201cThere are a lot of platforms and we don\u2019t need any other social networks for today.\u201d)<\/p>\n

Another big priority for Prisma\u00a0is improving quality for photo art styles by supporting\u00a0higher resolution and free aspect ratios (i.e. rather than the square format it currently enforces). \u201cThis is a number one feature users are looking forward to,\u201d it notes.<\/p>\n

It will also be working on speeding up offline processing.\u00a0And GIFs are still on its to-do list.<\/p>\n

But the really\u00a0big\u00a0elephant in the room for Prisma is how to survive when\u00a0the likes of Facebook and Google are consuming\u00a0your USP.<\/p>\n
