Yesterday Facebook demoed a stylized filter\u00a0feature<\/a> that it says will be coming to soon to the real-time processing options\u00a0it offers for its Live Video broadcast feature.<\/p>\n Not to be outdone, Prisma<\/a> \u2014 the app that popularized the art filter craze when it launched this summer<\/a>, racking up more than\u00a070 million downloads by October\u00a0\u2014 conducted its own demo yesterday.<\/p>\n Co-founder Alexey Moiseenkov broadcast a demo of Prisma\u2019s style transfer technology working in real-time via Facebook\u2019s Live platform, and used it as an opportunity to hold a QA session for viewers (full video embedded below).<\/p>\n \u201cI want to give a hello to Mark, and his videos,\u201d said Moiseenkov during the Prisma-filtered Facebook Live broadcast, which lasted around half an hour. \u201cThis is of course live from a device, and only the Internet \u2014 thanks Mark for the Live API to sharing this video.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cI hope someone is watching me,\u201d he added, before getting into his stride and answering questions in English and Russian.<\/p>\n He also\u00a0changed the filter multiple times, panning around his home in Moscow. \u201cI do not have a dog but I have a refrigerator,\u201d he joked \u2014 a reference to Zuckerberg posting a demo of Facebook\u2019s style transfer applied to a video of his pet dog.<\/p>\n Facebook is not the only tech giant working on AI-powered art filtering. Yesterday Google published a blog<\/a>\u00a0entitled \u201csupercharging style transfer\u201d, which detailed its work on a single specialized neural network<\/a> that lets users mix different styles to create a single image with multiple input styles. So the competition for Prisma as the plucky little startup could hardly\u00a0be greater.<\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s really cool that Google and Facebook are trying to copy this\u00a0but I think that\u2019s the evidence\u00a0that style transfer and all this on-device deep learning stuff matters a lot for every big company in the world,\u201d added\u00a0Moiseenkov, responding to a question about competition during the\u00a0Live broadcast.<\/p>\n There was early speculation<\/a> as to whether the Prisma team would get acquired. In the event, they have continued\u00a0developing the feature-set of their app in the face of platform giants intent on cloning their USP.<\/p>\n Prisma only launched its video feature<\/a> earlier this month, lagging behind app rivals like PicsArt that quickly jumped aboard the art filter bandwagon<\/a> with their own feature clones. But the team\u00a0evidently sees video as central to Prisma\u2019s\u00a0proposition, despite having had early success as a photo filtering app, offering users a quick way to spice up the look of their Instagram feeds.<\/p>\n \u201cWe want to bring the ultimate way to express yourself in terms of videos, and also augmented reality and all this stuff \u2014 I think that\u2019s huge because it\u2019s changed the emotional experience,\u201d added\u00a0Moiseenkov.<\/p>\n The most obvious advantage of filtered videos is a way to encourage more people to create and share video content, given it\u2019s effectively applying a stylized mask to what you see\u00a0\u2014 thereby\u00a0offering a neat\u00a0workaround for confidence (or even perceptions of privacy) issues that might be preventing certain users from sharing. It seems like\u00a0the kind of \u2018augmented reality\u2019 a lot of people could quickly get behind.<\/p>\n So it\u2019s not hard to see why Facebook is scrambling to launch\u00a0its own style transfer filters as quickly as possible. (\u201cLooking forward to getting this in your hands soon!\u201d said\u00a0CEO Mark Zuckerberg after yesterday\u2019s demo of Facebook\u2019s prototype.) Point being the tech giant is looking for ways\u00a0to encourage users\u00a0to do more personal and original sharing to combat a softening on that front<\/a>.<\/p>\n In Prisma\u2019s case, Moiseenkov said\u00a0the live feature would be launching in the next few days \u2014 perhaps later this week \u2014 with its iOS app first in line to get the new capability.
