Art imitation filter app sensation Prisma, that only launched this summer but racked adult some-more than 55 million downloads in a matter of weeks, has sparked a rush of other photo-processing apps all earnest to renovate your selfies into art fit to hang on a wall.

But can a Prisma smartphone snap indeed make a jump from a shade to your wall? Or is the splurge of colorful, pixelated virality usually good for practical appreciation?

Veteran print-your-own photos-on-canvas actor CanvasPop has speckled what it hopes will be a remunerative opportunity to monetize a remarkable bolt of catchy selfies appearing on Instagram et al — and says it’s been operative with Prisma to help users spin their snaps into canvases they can really hang on a wall.

It does already offer a use for printing Instagram and Facebook photos. But is evidently hoping Prisma’s smart art filters hint a run of new orders — with co-founder Adrian Salamunovic revelation TechCrunch this summer it begun saying “hundreds” of orders entrance in with a painterly outcome that it was quickly able to charge to a Prisma app.

He says it’s now in discussions with Prisma about integrating CanvasPop’s API with their iOS and Android apps.

For now Prisma users wanting to modify their digital works of art into bona fide wall art need to revisit a CavasPop website themselves where it has added a dedicated Prisma section.

CanvasPop offered to let TechCrunch try out a Prisma copy service. And try we did.

Here’s a Prisma imitation we sent to test out a board imitation quality:

"Prisma"

And here’s a ensuing CanvasPop print, propped adult artfully opposite a wall…

"canvaspop-prisma-desk"

You can see shots of a imitation fact in a gallery below, and a few photos of a unboxing.

CanvasPop offered us dual imitation sizes to exam a service: 12? x 12? or 20? x 20? — nonetheless a website has far more options (including tradition sizes).

We opted for a incomparable of a dual representation sizes to see how good a use rubbed a bigger blow-up. The outcome was a imitation of sincerely decent quality.

The board does have a slight glaze to it, a finish that competence or competence not be to your fondness (but expected creates a imitation some-more durable), and there was one teeny copy abnormality on a brunette’s black hair, though zero we couldn’t simply repair with a sharpie.

The tone facsimile looks somewhat off to my eye — with tones entrance out a bit some-more jam-packed and therefore ornate than a imitation appears (at slightest when noticed on iPhone or Mac screens). Color fealty isn’t almost skewed though, only design tones to cocktail a bit some-more than we competence think.

Salamunovic says smaller imitation sizes generally outcome in a “cleaner” looking imitation though he also touts a company’s “very low knowledge” in operative with low res images, due to its early involvement with Instagram filter photos, so argues it can positively hoop incomparable sizes too.

The largest fixed size imitation a website offers for Prisma prints is 61cm x 61cm, though presumably we can ask incomparable still around a tradition sequence (although going most bigger than that is substantially not a good thought if we wish a reasonable looking result).

“We specialize in copy low fortitude images in vast format,” says Salamunovic. “We’ve been doing it given 2009, a early days of iPhone 3 images and afterwards Instagram. We were a initial association to imitation Instagram images vast format.”

Whether a Prisma imitation works as wall art is another matter. Really, that’s a matter of personal taste. If you’re a arrange of chairman who’s happy to hang an Ikea imitation of a smoke-stack of pebbles in a center of your living room afterwards copy your possess Prismas during least means you’re going to finish adult with something a lot some-more original.

“Tens of millions of Prisma images have been generated — we wish to take a best images and imitation them as art,” adds Salamunovic. “There’s a outrageous marketplace for what we’re job ‘self-generated art’ and Prisma is one of a leaders in a space.”

On a cost front, CanvasPop’s pricing varies depending on distance and either we opt for only a rolled print in a tube or full on imagination framing options such as wooden edges to a stretched canvas. It’s also charity framed paper prints.

The 20? x 20? board distance that CanvasPop printed for TechCrunch is labelled at $114.

While a 12? x 12? canvas without a frame, so arriving rolled adult in a tube, would be a distant some-more affordable $35. (But of march you’d also need to support it and affix a hanger yourself.)

At a other finish of a scale, a largest fixed distance options with a fanciest frames can pull a per imitation cost past $250.

You can try out CanvasPop’s Prisma copy use for yourself here.
